With Khan family, has Trump inally gone too far?
By LISA LERER and
JONATHAN LEMIRE
Associated Press
NEW YORK — In a defen-
sive crouch, Donald Trump
complained today about being
“viciously attacked” by the
father of a decorated Muslim
Army captain killed in Iraq,
persisting in an emotionally
charged feud that has left him
increasingly isolated among fel-
low Republicans.
Trump broke a political and
societal taboo over the week-
end when he criticized Khizr
and Ghazala Khan, the bereaved
parents of Capt. Humayun
Khan, who was awarded a
Bronze Star and a Purple Heart
after he was killed in Iraq in
2004. Trump stoked outrage by
implying Ghazala Khan did not
speak while standing alongside
her husband at last week’s Dem-
ocratic convention because she
is a Muslim woman.
Outcry
The outcry has been swift
and bipartisan. Today, Repub-
lican Sen. John McCain said in
a statement that the fact Trump
won his party’s nomination
doesn’t give him “unfettered foreign Muslims into the U.S.
license to defame those who are and accused him of making no
the best among us.”

At last week’s convention, prisoner of war in Vietnam, and
Khizr Khan criticized Trump for branded Mexican immigrants
proposing to freeze the entry of rapists and criminals. Many of
his supporters have been drawn
to his tendency to say the polit-
ically unthinkable. The question
is whether this, inally, is a step
too far.
Pence’s statements
For the second time in a
week, Trump’s running mate,
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence,
issued a statement that appeared
designed to put some space
between the two men. The father
of a Marine, Pence said Sunday
that he and Trump believe Capt.
Khan is a hero and his family
“should be cherished by every
American.”
Last week, Pence said Rus-
sia would face “serious conse-
quences” for meddling in U.S.
elections at roughly the same
time Trump appeared to encour-
age it, telling reporters he would
welcome Russia unearthing
emails that Democratic nominee
Hillary Clinton deleted from the
private servers she used while
secretary of state.
Pence’s statement late Sun-
day came after an afternoon of
debate among his aides as to
whether he should ind a way to

Khizr Khan told his son’s story,
questioned whether Trump
had ever read the Constitution
and said “you have sacriiced
nothing.” During the speech,
Ghazala Khan stood quietly by
his side.
Trump responded in an
interview with ABC’s “This
Week,” saying: “If you look
at his wife, she was stand-
ing there. She had nothing to
say. She probably, maybe she
wasn’t allowed to have any-
thing to say.”
Ghazala Khan wrote in Sun-
day’s Washington Post that she
did not speak because talking
about her son’s death remains
dificult. “Every day, whenever
I pray, I have to pray for him,
and I cry,” she wrote.

US launches strikes
targeting IS in Libya
WASHINGTON — The United
States launched multiple airstrikes
against Islamic State militants in
Libya on Monday, opening a new,
more persistent front against the
group at the request of the United
Nations-backed government, Libyan
and U.S. oficials said.
Fayez Serraj, the head of the
U.N.-brokered presidency coun-
cil, said in a televised statement that
American warplanes attacked the IS
bastion of Sirte on the Mediterranean
in northern Libya. No U.S. ground
forces will be deployed, he said.
The precision strikes, which tar-
geted an Islamic State tank and vehi-
cles, come amid growing concerns
about the group’s increased threat
to Europe and its ability to inspire
attacks across the region.
“The presidency council, as the
general army commander, has made
a request for direct U.S. support to
carry out speciic airstrikes,” Serraj
said. “The irst strikes started today
in positions in Sirte, causing major
casualties.”
The strikes mark the start of a
more intense American role in the
ight against IS in Libya, as the U.S.
steps in to assist the fragile, U.N.-
backed government there. They were
the irst strikes by the U.S. on the
group in Libya since February.
In a statement, Pentagon press
secretary Peter Cook said President
Barack Obama authorized the strikes
following a recommendation from
Defense Secretary Ash Carter and
Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of
the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
“They are consistent with our
approach to combating ISIL by work-
ing with capable and motivated local
forces,” said Cook, using another
name for the Islamic State group,
adding that “additional U.S. strikes
will continue to target ISIL in Sirte.”
Expert to Rio
athletes: ‘Don’t
put your head
under water’
RIO DE JANEIRO — Just days
ahead of the Olympic Games the
waterways of Rio de Janeiro are as
ilthy as ever, contaminated with raw
human sewage teeming with danger-
ous viruses and bacteria, according
to a 16-month-long study commis-
sioned by The Associated Press.
Not only are some 1,400 ath-
letes at risk of getting violently ill
in water competitions, but the AP’s
tests indicate that tourists also face
potentially serious health risks on
the golden beaches of Ipanema and
Copacabana.
The AP’s survey of the aquatic
Olympic and Paralympic venues
has revealed consistent and danger-
ously high levels of viruses from
the pollution, a major black eye on
Rio’s Olympic project that has set
off alarm bells among sailors, row-
ers and open-water swimmers.
The irst results of the study pub-
lished over a year ago showed viral
levels at up to 1.7 million times
what would be considered worri-
some in the United States or Europe.
At those concentrations, swimmers
and athletes who ingest just three
teaspoons of water are almost cer-
tain to be infected with viruses that
can cause stomach and respira-
tory illnesses and more rarely heart
and brain inlammation — although
whether they actually fall ill depends
on a series of factors including the
strength of the individual’s immune
system.
Since the AP released the initial
results last July, athletes have been
taking elaborate precautions to pre-
vent illnesses that could potentially
knock them out of the competition,
including preventatively taking anti-
biotics, bleaching oars and donning
plastic suits and gloves in a bid to
limit contact with the water.
Obama points
to strides in
veterans’ health
WASHINGTON — President
Barack Obama is touting strides in
reducing homelessness among military
veterans as his administration reaches
the halfway point in building a massive
database on veterans’ health.
Overall veteran homelessness has
been cut nearly in half, by 47 percent,
although that’s still short of Obama’s long-
held goal of getting it to zero by 2015.
Credit also goes to irst lady Michelle
Obama and Vice President Joe Biden’s
wife, Jill, for using their initiative on mil-
itary families to challenge mayors and
county oficials nationwide to end veter-
ans’ homelessness, the White House says.
A half-million veterans have vol-
untarily given blood samples and
health data for a long-term government
research program that seeks to enroll 1
million veterans as part of an Obama
initiative to make “precision medicine,”
or tailored treatment, a reality.
Those two milestones are being
announced Monday when Obama
addresses the annual convention of the
Disabled American Veterans in Atlanta,
the White House said. The appearance
before the service organization is a vale-
dictory address by Obama, who ends his
eight years in the White House in January.

In a preview of his comments, the
White House says Obama will argue that
getting ex-military members the health
care and beneits they’ve earned is a
national promise that “can’t be broken.”
He also will recap how he has tried to
help former military members, moving
beyond headline-grabbing scandals over
lengthy wait-times for veterans seeking
medical care that led to the iring of Vet-
erans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki.
Texas balloon pilot
had been arrested
for DWI in 2000
LOCKHART, Texas — The pilot of
a hot air balloon that crashed in Texas
and killed all 16 people aboard had
been arrested in Missouri for driving
while intoxicated in 2000, police said,
and the Better Business Bureau there
had warned consumers about doing
business with him after complaints
about his balloon touring company.
Alfred “Skip” Nichols, 49, was
identiied as the pilot by his friend and
roommate Alan Lirette, who said that
Nichols was a good pilot.
“That’s the only thing I want to talk
about, is that he’s a great pilot,” Lirette
said, speaking to the AP from a house
he shared with Nichols in Kyle, Texas.
“There’s going to be all kinds of reports
out in the press and I want a positive
image there too.”
