They lived in the back of the store for
seven years. While Jean rented rooms
in the hotel and operated the gift shop,
Bud worked two jobs: selling cars at
a local Ford dealership and selling
furnaces for an oil distributor.
A few years after they opened the gift
shop, the Ter Hars added clothing to
their inventory, and soon they became
a clothing store.
TER HAR’S is a clothing store in
Seaside and Cannon Beach. But more
than that, Ter Har’s is a family affair,
and it has been for over 65 years.
As the Ter Har family celebrates over
65 years in business, they recall when
Seaside was a town of vacant lots
and business was seasonal. Then, the
“season” then lasted four months a
year, and many stores were closed for
several months, Jeff recalled.
The Ter Har name became known in
the area in 1951, when the young Bud
and Jean Ter Har, fresh from Seattle,
bought the former Merriman Hotel in
Seaside. In addition to the three-story
hotel, the Ter Hars operated a small
gift store. Bud and Jean knew the gift
business: He had worked as a traveling
salesman for a gift company when the
couple lived in Seattle.
Because the apartment was, according
to Bud “too valuable a space to be
living in,” the Ter Hars moved in 1958
to a house in Gearhart, where Jean
continues to live. Bud died in 2009.
The clothing store with the black-and-
white awning was torn down when
Trendwest Inc. bought it and other
property they owned along Broadway
and the Prom in 2001 to build its
condominiumt resorts. The Ter Hars
became owners of the first floor of the
building and not only continue to oper-
ate their store in a Broadway storefront,
but rent out other storefronts to busi-
nesses all the way to the Prom.
Jean and Bud
always believed
in reinvesting
in Seaside by
opening other
storefronts. This
gives people op-
portunities to pros-
per in business.
65
years
Besides their financial investment in
Clatsop County, however, the Ter Hars
also invest their time in the community.
They often can be seen supporting
athletic teams and other student orga-
nizations in the Seaside schools. Bud,
Peter and Jeff have had associations
with the Seaside Downtown Devel-
opment Association and The Seaside
Chamber of Commerce (all three had a
turn as Chamber President).
With the business Jean, Jeff & Pavi are
able to work and contribute with the
Assistance League Columbia Pacific to
help clothe children in the county. Pavi
is an active member in Assistance
League.
In addition to the Seaside store, they
have operated stores in Astoria and
Long Beach, Wash. In 1991, the Ter
Hars opened the Cannon beach store,
which continues to operate today.
“It’s important not only for us to let
our customers have a good shopping
experience, but we’re also like a mini
chamber of commerce,” Jeff said.
“People need to know we have an
aquarium, a two-mile Prom and where
to get seafood.”
In total, the Ter Hars own six commer-
cial buildings that have 34 different
businesses operating in them. All of the
properties are in Clatsop County.
We’ve appreciated all of our employ-
ees over the years, past and present,
we couldn’t have done it without your
dedicated contribution.

Sweetly Celebrating 53 Years!
On April 1, 1963 the doors to Bruce’s Candy Kitchen
opened and Treva & Bruce Haskell entered the candy
business.  With our trademark pink & white exterior stripes,
a few candy recipes and lots of love they set out on what
would become a 5th generation owned and operated family
business.  Over the last 53 years our family has greatly
enjoyed serving our homemade treats to generations
of visitors to Cannon Beach.  In 2011, we expanded our
business to the Seaside Outlet Mall, so the communities of
Cannon Beach and Seaside could both enjoy the wonderful
treats we offer.
We take great pride in producing the freshest and tastiest
salt water taffy, hand dipped chocolates, caramel corn,
peanut brittle & more to our loyal customers and fi rst time
visitors.  We love that something as simple as a piece of taffy
can become a life long memory for many of our customers,
as generations of families enjoy our sweets.  We are honored
to be making sweet memories since 1963 and look forward
to making many, many more!
We make it fresh and we make it great!
