Sturgell advances in Women’s
division of Coast Invitational
The Daily Astorian
WARRENTON — Golfers
in the Women’s, Seniors and
Super Senior divisions took
center stage Tuesday, on the
second day of match play in
the 106th annual Oregon Coast
Invitational.
Three-time
champion
Amanda Jacobs is looking for
title No. 4, and will have her
hands full, if Tuesday’s com-
petition is any indication.
A few of the featured
match-ups in the Wom-
en’s division included Molly
Edmunds vs. Dotty John-
son; Ali Battaglia vs. Cheryl
Wessell; sisters Cappy Mack
against Nikki Mack; and Katie
Sturgell had a successful start
to her 2016 tournament, with a
win over Mary Swingle in the
championship light.
Sturgell highlighted her
round with an approach shot on
the ninth hole, a shot from 104
yards that just missed, rimming
in and around the cup. The
birdie put her 1-up at the turn,
on her way to the victory.
Action continues today
with play in the Grand Cham-
pions, Junior Seniors and
Super Seniors divisions.
Match-ups in the cham-
pionship light of the Grand
Champions include Riley
Elmes vs. John DeLong (1:34
p.m. tee time); Taylor Swin-
gle vs. Mike Swingle (1:42
p.m.); Astoria’s Jeff Canessa
vs. Mike Fritz (1:42 p.m.) and

A
News of the ferry’s immi-
nent return comes after a year-
long effort to bring the Tourist
No. 2 home.
In mid-2015, Robert “Jake”
Jacob, majority owner of the
Cannery Pier Hotel, learned that
the 92-year-old ferry — which
had been rechristened “MV
Kirkland” — was moored in
Bremerton, Washington. He and
Lint decided that the Tourist No.
2 belonged in its birthplace.
The project leaders origi-
nally expected to welcome it
back last summer, but coordi-
nating the haul-out and sched-
uling the inspections and
repairs proved more compli-
cated than they had predicted.
In the meantime, the group
worked to raise funds and
gather community support.
The nonproit, which
recently placed a $15,000
deposit on the ferry, plans to
buy the Tourist No. 2 from
Lint on contract.
Andrea Perez, a board mem-
ber, said the group is expand-
ing to include more volunteers
who will act as docents. In addi-
tion, they are putting together an
online fundraising platform.
Eventually, they hope to con-
vert the ferry into a community
asset that, like the Astoria River-
front Trolley, will offer rides to
locals and visitors, and provide a
venue for private parties.
“Who’d (have) thought
that 90 years later the origi-
nal wooden Ferry Boat would
come back to town,” Jacob
wrote in a message. “It is an
amazing opportunity for Asto-
ria to bring it back!”
‘Sweet old boat’
The three-deck, wood-
en-hull watercraft — which
replaced the Tourist No. 1 —
is the last surviving Astoria
ferry, one of several that oper-
ated on the river during the
20th century, until the Astoria
Bridge rendered ferry service
obsolete half a century ago.
Ron Stidham, an Olney
resident who worked on the
ferries, including Tourist No.
2, from 1956 to 1966, hopes to
be there when it appears.
“I’ve seen just a few small
photos of it, and I’m intrigued as
to what they’ve done,” he said.
He expects that seeing the
ferry again will feel like reunit-
ing with an long-lost friend.
“She’s a sweet old boat,
handled the best of any of
them here,” he said. “It’s going
to be something to see. She’s
been gone a long time.”

Bullpen swap: Blue Jays send Storen to Mariners for Benoit

They had anticipated the
ferry arriving as early as this
afternoon, but inclement
weather has so far thwarted
those plans and forced Lint
to remain at Port Townsend,
Washington.
When the ferry does arrive,
“hopefully, we can drum up
enough people that want to come
down and see the ferry for the
first time after 50 years,” Dulcye
Taylor, vice chairwoman of The
Astoria Ferry board, said.

der’s current deals were set to

valed success in their franchise
history will be teamed together
for another few seasons.
Carroll is 60-36 in the reg-

He’s taken the Seahawks to the
