Mixed results for All-Stars at state
By MIKE WEBER
For The Daily Astorian
The Lower Columbia Cal
Ripken Baseball All-Star
teams each capped a suc-
cessful season by winning
games in the North Oregon
State Tournament over the
weekend.
The 11U All-Stars won
4-3 over the Portland All-
Stars Saturday at Waluga
Park in Lake Oswego. The
9U All-Stars inished with a
1-2 record in their tournament
in Gresham, including a 13-3
win over the Lakeridge Pac-
ers Friday.
The 11U All-Star squad,
guided by coach Ryan
Helligso, posted a 1-2 record
in the ive-team state tour-
nament. Lower Columbia
opened with a 4-3 loss to West
Linn Saturday. The 11’s had
a tough game Sunday, losing
12-4 to Portland in a rematch
of Saturday’s contest. Lower
Columbia’s 11U All-Stars,
who advanced to the champi-
onship game a year ago at the
10U level, concluded its sea-
son with an impressive overall
record of 12-7 and third place
in the state tournament.
The team consisted of
players from Warrenton,
Astoria, Knappa and Ilwaco
and Naselle, Wash.
“We had a wonderful sum-
mer, while playing in tourna-
ments in Kelso, West Linn
and Longview in addition to
the state tourney,” Helligso
said. “It was great to inish
the season with a winning
record. With the exception of
one player, this was the same
group of kids that took second
place a year ago at state. We
had a real solid team, led by
standout players Kolton Lind-
strom, Clay Bergeson and Erik
Dixon, who helped lead our
team all year and they each
earned Most Valuable Player
Awards during the season.”
The 11U All-Star squad
also included Gunnar Olson,
Brayden Rogers, Cole Chat-
tick, Brandon Helligso, Alex
Hillard, Connley Fromwiller
and Jase Junes.
The 11’s might have felt
conident going into Sunday’s
early 8 a.m. contest versus
Portland, especially after get-
ting a win against them Satur-
day. However, it was the Port-
land All-Stars who had the
momentum throughout the
contest and got some revenge
with the win.

“It was a real tough tour-
nament and we kind of had
a disadvantage because there
were some real strong teams
to compete with in Lake
Oswego,” Helligso said.
“West Linn is typically a pow-
erhouse group at this level.
We had to play them in our
irst game and they’re con-
sidered one of the strongest
teams in the state.”
Portland jumped in front
2-0 at the outset of the game,
forcing Helligso to make an
early pitching change. Lind-
strom started on the mound,
but was relieved by Bergeson
after Portland loaded the bases
and scored two runs. Portland
tacked on another run to build
an early 3-0 lead at the end
of the irst inning and then
continued to extend the mar-
gin throughout the game to
remain in control and get the
win.
Tough opponents
The 9U Lower Columbia
Cal Ripken All-Stars faced
tough opponents in the sev-
en-team, three-day state tour-
nament at Gresham Main
City Park. The 9’s had rough
opener, losing 20-10 to Laker-
idge July 14. On Friday, the
two squads met again in a
rematch and Lower Columbia
got revenge, winning 13-3.
In a matchup Saturday,
Lower Columbia faced a
strong West Linn A squad and
lost 10-3 to conclude its sea-
son with an overall record of
8-9.
West Linn displayed a
potent offensive attack while
scoring in every inning. The
West Linn All-Stars jumped
in front 8-0 after four innings.
The trio of Lower Columbia
pitchers Kyle Morris, Xahn
Quang and Karson Casper
tried their best to thwart
West Linn’s offense, but it
just proved to be too much to
overcome.
“I pitched pretty good in
the game on Friday (a 13-3
win) and I had a couple of hits
in that game so that was really
fun,” Morris said. “I was
pretty happy to win an MVP
Award for that game too, and
that made me feel good.”
West Linn built a 9-0 ifth
inning advantage and threat-
ened to end the contest early
after ive with the 10-run

mercy rule. Lower Colum-
bia, guided by co-coaches
Ryan Caldwell and Brandon
Aven, proudly withstood the
West Linn attack though and
kept the margin at 9-0 in the
top of the ifth, guaranteeing a
six-inning contest.
“That team (West Linn)
that we lost to had been
10-running everybody, so
to play them in a competi-
tive six-inning game was just
a great accomplishment for
these kids,” said Caldwell,
who coached the Ilwaco Cal
Ripken team during the reg-
ular season. “These kids are
great and I wouldn’t trade
them for anyone. I had a blast
with these kids and it was
fun coaching kids who really
wanted to be on the team. All
of these kids worked hard,
they practiced hard and they
were all focusing on just
getting better. Kyle Morris
played great in the game we
won and he earned the MVP
Award.”
Lower Columbia had an
offensive surge in the bot-
tom of the ifth, erasing the
goose egg on the scoreboard

viding them with a glimmer
of hope for a possible come-
back. Lower Columbia batted
around its lineup with all nine
players having at-bats in the
impressive rally.
Jacob Lindstrom (1-for-
2, walk) helped spark the
offense with a leadoff single
and then he advanced to sec-
ond and third on passed balls.
Lindstrom scored Lower
Columbia’s irst run on a sac-
riice RBI groundout by Aus-
tin Aven to make it 9-1. Jack
Strange and Kaden Roberts
drew consecutive walks. An
RBI single by Kyle Morris
(1-for-3) drove home Strange,
making it 9-2.
“It felt pretty good to score
our irst run,” said Lindstrom,
from Naselle, who won the
MVP Award Saturday. “They
(West Linn) were proba-
bly the toughest team that
we’ve played this year. I won
two MVP Awards actually,
because I got one in our irst
game on Thursday.”
A single by Kaden Burch
loaded the bases and then
Karson Casper drew a walk
as Roberts went home on the
free pass from third, making it
9-3. West Linn got a run in the
top of the sixth for a 10-3 mar-
gin. Lower Columbia never
quit, and had four baserun-
ners in the inal frame as they
hoped their momentum would
continue, but were unable to
score.
“I had lots of fun and I met
lots of other kids and made
some new friends at the tour-
nament,” said Casper, who
had six strikeouts Saturday vs.
West Linn.
The 9U squad was rep-
resented by players from
Astoria, Knappa, Ilwaco
and Naselle. The All-Stars
included Jacob Klepp, Der-
rick Cutting, Cole Weston and
Gavin Brier.
“The highlight of the tour-
nament for me was hitting a
double to the fence in our irst
game Thursday,” Cutting said.
The Lower Columbia
10-year-old All-Stars took
part in their state tournament
in Newberg, where the local
kids went 1-2 in pool play.
Lower Columbia opened
with a loss to West Linn
Select, then scored a win over
a team from Gresham before
inishing with a loss to Sandy.
The All-Stars had a few
highlights, including home
runs from Karson Hawkins
and Cannon Johnson.

SEATTLE — Adam Lind
hit a three-run pinch-hit homer
in the ninth inning to give the
Seattle Mariners an improb-
able 4-3 comeback victory
over the White Sox on Mon-
day night, handing Chicago its
ifth consecutive loss and wast-
ing a dominant performance by
Chris Sale.
Seattle, which had managed
just one hit in eight innings
off Sale, rallied against closer
David Robertson (0-2), who
had recorded 13 straight save
opportunities.
Franklin Gutierrez sin-
gled to open the ninth, but was
forced out at second on Rob-
inson Cano’s ielder’s choice.
Nelson Cruz walked and
Dae-Ho Lee struck out.
Kyle Seager followed with
an RBI single to center to make
it 3-1. Lind pinch-hit for Chris
Iannetta and hammered an 0-1
pitch over the wall in right-cen-
ter for his 14th home run.
Sale, bidding to become
the irst 15-game winner in the
majors, allowed just a irst-in-
ning single en route to eight
scoreless innings.
Tim Anderson and Todd
Frazier homered to account
for all of the runs for the White
Sox, who were outscored 16-1
in being swept three games
over the weekend by the
Angels.
Sale gave up a one-out sin-
gle in the irst to Gutierrez,
who was erased on a double
play. Sale walked Leonys Mar-
tin in the third and then did not
allow another runner until tir-
ing in the seventh.
Sale hit Gutierrez and Lee
with pitches in the seventh, but
escaped by striking out Seager
to end the inning.
