California pot exhibit aims for
debate on provocative plant

OAKLAND, Calif. — It’s
known as Mary Jane, ganja,
Chronic and even the sticky
icky and has been featured
in countless movies, includ-
ing one that warned of its dan-
gers, “Reefer Madness.”
Now, marijuana is the sub-
ject of a contemporary history
and science exhibit.
“Altered State: Mari-
juana in California,” a one-
of-its-kind museum exhibi-
tion focusing on the topic,
is open through the summer
at the Oakland Museum of
California.
Set against the backdrop
of a California ballot mea-
sure this year asking voters
to legalize marijuana’s recre-
ational use, the exhibition fea-
tures artwork, political docu-
ments and posters, scientiic
displays, and interactive and
multimedia exhibits all meant
to provoke questions and con-
versations about the provoca-
tive plant.

open and participatory expe-
rience to engage anyone who
has an opinion or wants to
learn more about the com-

about this topic,” said Asso-
ciate Curator of Natural Sci-
ences Sarah Seiter.
“We’re interested in pre-
senting a forum for all sides
of deep community conver-
sations about marijuana, its
history, politics, culture and
impacts on our state,” Seiter
said.
The exhibit comes at a
time when 35 states already
have medical marijuana laws
on the books and four states
and Washington, D.C., have
legalized weed for recre-
ational use.
It is organized into 10
different areas of focus —
Cannabis Science, Medi-
cal Marijuana, Proitable
Pot, Sacred Ganja, Criminal
Dope, Creative Grass, Evil
Weed, Politically Loaded,
Youth and Weed, and Recre-
ational Reefer. It was a two-
year project with about 100
collaborators.
“Weed has a lot of fans,”
Seiter said. “We didn’t want
to open ourselves up to crit-
icism. We wanted to do our
homework.”
Highlights of the exhi-
bition include live and pre-
served specimens of canna-
bis on loan to the museum, a
walk-in installation by artist
Cybele Lyle that alters view-
ers’ perspectives of space and
time, and a “Cannabis Con-
fessional” that allows vis-
itors to share their private,
anonymous thoughts about
marijuana.
“All of us as individuals
and as staff have very per-
sonal and emotional reac-
tions to pot,” said Lori Foga-
rty, the museum’s director. “I
think a lot of that depends on
where you are in your life and
your own personal experi-
ences. What we were striving
to do is move the conversation
beyond those purely emo-
tional reactions to a broader
understanding.”
The
exhibition
runs
through Sept. 25.
The U.S. Department of
Agriculture will spend $27.5
million on cranberry concen-
trate, buying a fraction of the
surplus berries that are sup-
pressing prices.
The purchase of the val-
ue-added product will soak up
30 million pounds, or 300,000
barrels, of cranberries, accord-
ing to the industry’s Cranberry
Marketing Committee, which
announced the purchase in a
press release June 29.
“We’re pleased to hear that.
Certainly when you have an
inventory of 7 million barrels,
it’s nice to have some help get-
ting rid of that,” Washington
cranberry grower Malcolm
McPhail said July 1.
Total U.S. production
in 2015 was about 8.4 mil-
lion barrels, according to the
USDA National Agricultural
Statistics Service.
The cranberry surplus has
hovered around 90 percent in
recent years, swelled partly
by a bumper crop of nearly 9
million barrels in 2013. Farm-
ers have seen prices fall every
year since 2009.
The average price growers
received in 2014 was $30.90
per 100-pound barrel. The
USDA is due to issue a report
Wednesday on the 2015 crop.

appreciate the USDA’s atten-
tion to the cranberry industry.”
The USDA purchases
surplus food to stabilize
prices under a program cre-
ated during the Depression.
The government distributes
the food to schools, summer
camps and charities.
The USDA has been a
regular customer for cran-
berry farmers. The purchases
included buying 680,000 bar-
rels for $55 million around
Thanksgiving 2014. A bipar-
tisan group of federal law-
makers from the ive cranber-
ry-producing states lobbied for
the purchase.
“We are grateful for the
continued support of the
USDA and appreciate the pos-
itive impact that this bonus
buy has on our industry,” the
marketing committee’s execu-
tive director, Michelle Hogan,
said in a written statement.
A Massachusetts task force
in mid-June made several rec-
ommendations to help that
state’s cranberry growers.
The
recommendations
included providing grants, tax
credits and low-interest loans
to farmers to renovate bogs
and increase yields.
Other recommendations
called for programs to pay
farmers to convert bogs to
wetlands to reduce production.
Cranberries are the top
farm crop in Massachusetts,
the country’s second-leading
cranberry producer.
Washington, the ifth-lead-
ing cranberry state after num-
ber-three New Jersey and
number-four Oregon, has
1,700 acres planted in cran-
berries. “I think everybody is
hanging in there,” McPhail
said.
