Since 1944, the Astoria
Lions Club has raised funds by
recycling newsprint from The
Daily Astorian, according to
Lions member Carl Abraham.
On Tuesday night, the Lions
recognized that generosity
with its Helen Keller Benefac-
tor award.
Lions President Tom Gill
said the Astoria group would
be unable to carry out its mis-
sion of aiding eyesight without
the some $20,000 it raises each
year by recycling surplus from
the Astorian.
Accepting the award,
Daily Astorian Editor &
Publisher Steve Forrester
thanked the Lions for making
a ground-breaking gift to the
Liberty Theater’s restoration
in 2000.
In its annual election, Char-
lene Larsen was chosen as
president.
