Duck football stars hit local golf course
By GARY HENLEY
The Daily Astorian
WARRENTON — Ducks
were on the Beach, in the air, on
the golf course, in the clubhouse
… there were Ducks, Ducks
everywhere Friday afternoon,
with a high concentration at the
Astoria Golf & Country Club.
And some pretty high-pro-
ile Ducks: Among others, Mike
Bellotti, Chris Miller, Alex
Molden, Max Unger … and a
host of alumni interested in rais-
ing money for the University of
Oregon, by way of a little golf.
The Oregon Boosters Asso-
ciation and organizer Tim
Regan staged the seventh annual
‘Ducks at the Beach’ gathering,
a yearly fund-raising event for
the University of Oregon, held
at the Astoria Country Club.
It’s just one day and one
round of golf, but it’s one more
way the university reaches out to
different parts of the state — to
show that the Ducks do indeed
care about the North Coast, and
the local Duck fans and support-
ers care about them.
“There’s great people here,
great fans of the Ducks, and
they bring back a lot of my for-
mer players for the golf,” said
Bellotti, playing in his seventh
Ducks at the Beach event.
“It’s neat to be able to con-
nect with my former players, to
see how they’ve done and what
they’re doing with their lives,
and visit with people who have
become friends.”
After a 1 p.m. Shotgun Start
for the golf, there was a cock-
tail hour, silent auction, banquet
dinner and a short live auction.
“I think I’ve been to every
single one … I think I may be
the only person that’s been to
every single one,” said Bellotti,
Former Oregon football coach and current ESPN com-
mentator Mike Bellotti was taking part in his seventh
‘Ducks at the Beach’ tournament.

ing an air horn during a tee shot.
who endured a pretournament
rain shower, along with the other
golfers.
“As long as it’s not blow-
ing sideways and raining at the
same time,” he said. “And the
sun is going to shine today. I’ll
guarantee that, because even
though it may rain occasionally
in Autzen Stadium, it never rains
at this tournament.”
The tournament is a plus for
all involved, beneits the uni-
versity and “it’s a chance to get
Ducks together and celebrate all
the victories, whether it’s on the
golf course, the basketball arena,
the football ield, or any of the
sports.”
Other Ducks seen on the
course were Ryan DePalo (2004-
07), Brent Haberly (2005-06),
Rasuli Webster (1999-2002) and
Cole Linehan (2005-08) — who
will return to the North Coast
next fall, as the new varsity foot-
ball coach at Banks.
Also on hand was Puddles,
the Duck mascot, playing his
pranks (blowing an air horn in
the middle of tee shots), and
always good for selies.
Unger (2005-08) is a former
Duck as well as a Seattle Sea-
hawk, now entering his second
season with the New Orleans
Saints.
“I’m logging more airline
miles in the off-season now,
but it’s worth it,” said Unger,
who was playing in his second
Ducks at the Beach. “I’m spend-
ing time between New Orleans,
the Northwest and back home in
Hawaii.”
Bellotti will soon return
to work as a commentator for
ESPN, “probably doing games
and some studio, a combination
package,” he said. “I have not
done games on a regular basis
for the last four years, so I’m
excited about getting back to
doing a game every weekend.”
And the former Oregon
coach — with 116 career wins
(most in Duck history) from
1995 to 2008 — gave his take
on Duck Football, 2016.
“They played one bad game
last year against Utah, and one
bad half of football against
TCU,” he said. “It depends a

lot on Dakota Prukop (transfer
from Montana State), and how
that quarterback situation works
out, and how Brady Hoke’s
defense comes to the plate. But I
think the Ducks are an elite foot-
ball program with an elite team.
“I see them probably exceed-
ing the 8 1/2 wins that most of
the prognosticators say. I think
they have the potential to win
nine or 10.”
