Another rally, another Logger win
Knappa
advances to
second straight
title game
By GARY HENLEY
The Daily Astorian
KNAPPA — Looking to
build a winning high school
baseball program?
The Knappa Loggers —
who usually win anyway —
have stumbled upon an unbeat-
able formula: Build a 3-0
deicit, bring in your “closer,”
then rally for the win.
Of course it helps when
you’ve already got an ace
pitcher who has literally never
(as in never) lost a high school
game; you own the state’s best
defense at the 2A level; and
your entire lineup is known as
“Murderer’s Row.”
Knappa coach Jeff Miller
is thinking of writing a book
on the subject (“Winning
the Unconventional Way”),
while his Loggers are once
again headed back to the
state championship game fol-
lowing a 9-4 win over Mon-
roe Tuesday in a 2A semiinal
contest at Teevin Field.
The Loggers will face
Burns at 1:30 p.m. Friday at
Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer.
Burns may own the No. 1
seed, but the numbers will be
stacked against the Hilanders,
who will face a team that has
yet to start their No. 1 pitcher
in a playoff game this year; a
team that’s won 51 of its last
52 games; and a team that’s
2-0 at Volcanoes Stadium.
And a team that’s just plain
on ire.
The Loggers may have a
bad inning here or there, but
no team has found a way yet
to beat “The Formula.”
For the third straight game
— all against teams from the
Special District 3 — the Log-
gers fell behind by at least a
3-0 count, put Dale Takalo
on the mound in the middle
innings, then rallied to win.
Knappa gave up three runs
in the irst inning Tuesday,
took a brief lead with four runs

the Monroe Dragons in the 2A semifinals Tuesday at Teevin Field in Knappa. Knappa

in the third, then snapped a 4-4
tie with four more in the ifth.
Miller wondered aloud
after the win, “How can you
have three games the exact
same, against three teams
from the same league?
“It was a carbon copy of
the last two,” he said. “We
came out with some shaky
defense, a little bit of nerves,
no base hits early in the game
… then middle innings, here
we go, we have a big inning,
we hold on, Dale pumps in
the strikes, and we go home
happy.
“You’d think that’s our rec-
ipe, but it isn’t,” he laughed.
“I’ll write a book on this. If
anybody wants gray hair, fol-
low this formula.”
It’s still become a solid
gold routine for the Loggers.
Call it the “Good-alo Game.”
Michal Goodman got his
third consecutive start, did his
job by keeping the Loggers
within three runs, then let the
offense and Takalo do the rest.
“Nothing against Mike
— he’s done a good job the
whole year, and he’s doing
ine for us right now,” said
Knappa sophomore Reuben
Cruz, who has yet to experi-
ence a playoff loss in his prep
career.
“Mike starts on the mound
and wins games,” he said. “If
Mike can do his job like that
every time, we’re good.”
Meanwhile, Takalo drove
in Knappa’s irst run in the
third on a double to left that
scored Logan Bartlett; and
after an intentional walk to
Cruz, senior Noah Kinney
highlighted his inal home
game with a single that plated
Colton Weirup and Takalo for
a 6-4 lead.
With his leadoff single,
“Bartlett set the tone early and
got us rolling,” Miller said.
“When your eight-hitter is a
freshman who can go and do
that — and he’s done it all
year — that’s a great deal. See-
ing him get the irst hard con-
tact of the day, it’s one of those
classic deals where the hitting
became contagious. Suddenly
we’re hitting the balls hard.”
The Dragons scored a run
in the top of the ifth, but
Knappa put the game away in
the bottom of the inning.
Cruz led off with a ground-
rule double, and a crucial
Monroe error allowed Kinney
to reach second and pushed
Cruz to third.
Following two consecutive
walks that loaded the bases,
Weirup and Jason Miller each
had run-scoring singles for an
8-4 lead.
The Dragons — much like
they did in last year’s state
championship loss to the Log-
gers — suffered a defensive
meltdown with two errors in
the ifth and two more in the
sixth.
“I don’t know what it is,”
Cruz said of Knappa’s third
straight comeback win. “I think
we know that it’s not over, and
that we can always come back.
We’ve done it twice already, so
there’s no reason to get down.”
Knappa inished with 12
hits from eight different play-
ers, while Mason Hoover
drove in three runs.
Takalo picked up the vic-
tory, as he faced just two bat-
ters over the minimum in
his ive innings pitched. He
struck out the side in the top
of the seventh.
“It was not a game where
either team was clean,” coach
Miller said. “Some nerves
showed up and a few other
things. You name it, we had
it. And later in the game (the
Dragons) made a few physi-
cal mistakes of their own. But
we did hit the ball, and we hit
it hard at them, from the mid-
dle innings all the way to the
end.”
KLAMATH FALLS —
The Astoria baseball team
rode the “underdog” role all
the way to the Final Four.
But that’s where the trail
ended for the Fighting Fish-
ermen, as No. 1-seed Henley
jumped out to an early lead
and held on for a 5-2 win over
No. 12-seed Astoria in a Class
4A semiinal at Rosser Field in
Klamath Falls.
A two-run homer by Hen-
ley’s Kyle Sturgeon in the
ifth inning helped the Hor-
nets clinch a spot in Satur-
day’s 4A state championship
game against Estacada, which
beat Banks 8-3 in the other
semiinal.
Henley also opened the
scoring with the long ball, as
Chase Fernlund belted a two-
run homer in the irst inning off
Astoria starter Tyler Lyngstad.
Fernlund, also the Hor-
nets’ starter on the mound,
tossed ive innings of shutout
ball, scattering six hits with six
strikeouts for the win.
The Fishermen inished
with nine hits and drew
six walks, but stranded 11
baserunners.
Henley’s Darren Brown
opened the bottom of the ifth
with a triple, scoring Blake
Loney, then Sturgeon’s home
run made it 5-0.
Astoria scored its two runs
in the sixth, on an RBI double
by Jasyn Gohl and a run-scor-
ing hit by Kyle Strange.
Fridtjof Fremstad, Olaf
Englund and Strange all had
two hits apiece for Astoria,
which inishes 17-12 overall.
No. 1-ranked Henley, 28-2
overall, had 11 hits off Lyngs-
tad and Fremstad.
