Great Vow Zen
CLATSKANIE — The
Great Vow Zen Monastery,
located at 79640 Quincy-May-
ger Road in Clatskanie, holds
a Jizo Ceremony for Children
from 3 to 5:30 p.m. May 28. To
help families and friends in their
process of grief over the death of
a child, lost children are honored
in a ceremony in the Jizo Bodhi-
sattva remembrance garden.
Time is spent making a per-
sonal memorial for the child,
by writing a message, making a
simple toy or necklace, or sew-
ing a small garment. There are
materials available, but partic-
ipants may wish to bring scis-
sors, thread, needle, and a small
piece of red cloth. Many also
bring a picture of the child or
other personal token of remem-
brance. These memorials are left
on the Jizo statues. Families and
friends are welcome to revisit
the garden any time.
The ceremony is very sim-
ple, and done in silence. There
is no charge, and anyone of
any religious afiliation is wel-

cated to the Virgin Mary, and the
St. Mary, Star of the Sea and St.
Francis de Sales Catholic Church

ing. The program was directed
by Rev. Ben Innes and Helen
Dresen. Music was sung, accom-
panied by pianist Rosy Doyle.
Religious education teach-
ers include the coordinator,
Rosy Doyle, Dana Berny, Emily
Borup, and Helen Dresen. The
students, members of parish
families in grades K-6, were
given fresh lowers to make a
bouquet for the Virgin Mary. A
drawing was to select the girl
to crown Mary, and the crown
bearer. Those chosen were Miley
Brouse and Walker Steele.
A procession from the church
took all in attendance to the
grotto to the west of church,
where there is a statue of the Vir-
gin Mary in memory of Louie
and Marie Angstrom and Bill
and Ruth Knauss. The grotto was
crafted by Joe Herman in 2000.
The event ended with cup-
cakes decorated with a mini-
crown, ice cream and a blessed
medal.
Grace Episcopal
Sunday is Hunger Aware-
ness Sunday at Grace Epis-
copal Church, 1545 Franklin
Avenue. There is an ingather-
ing for the Hunger Ministries at
Grace, both monetary as well as
non-perishable food items. Cans
of chili, pork and beans and
macaroni and cheese are espe-
cially needed.
The monthly Community
Dinner will be served in the Par-
ish Hall at 4 p.m. Sunday, free
of charge.

Bethany Free Lutheran

the movie “The Lion, the Witch
and the Wardrobe” at 6 p.m.
Sunday. This 2005 live action
movie is a fantasy adventure

On May 7, Grand Knight Jerry Lencioni, representing William J. Leahy Knights of Columbus,
Council 1307, came out to meet the Clatsop County Track and Field Team during a Satur-
day practice and presented a check for $1,950 for the Clatsop County Special Olympics to
Steve McAloney, Special Olypmics Oregon local program coordinator. The funds, which
were the result of the Knights Annual Tootsie-Roll Handout and Special Olympics Fund
Drive at the Warrenton Fred Meyer Store, will be used to purchase track and field uniforms.

Memorial Scholarship Com-
mittee is holding its 37th annual
Smorgasbord and Auctions
Saturday at Jewell School.
The all-you-can-eat smor-
gasbord, featuring an array of
hot dishes, salads and a large

dessert selection, begins at 4
p.m. The dinner costs $8 for
adults, or $5 for seniors citi-
zens and children. Children
under age 5 eat for free.
The silent auction ends
by 6:05 p.m., followed by the
winners of the hand-tied stu-
dent-made quilts at 6:15 p.m.,
and the hand-crafted quilt
“Rings of Freedom” drawing
at 6:25 p.m. Oral auction items
can be viewed until the auction
starts at 6:30 p.m. The evening
concludes with multiple rafle
drawings.
Proceeds from the dinner,
drawings and auctions facili-
tate scholarships for graduating
seniors of Jewell High School.
