Methodists trying to avoid church split over gay rights
By RACHEL ZOLL
AP Religion Writer
Struggling to avoid a split
over gay rights, the top poli-
cy-making body of the United
Methodist Church on Wednes-
day narrowly approved a full
review of all church law on
sexuality, amid an emotional
meeting roiled by talk of
schism.
Delegates at the Method-
ist General Conference, meet-
ing in Portland, Oregon, voted
428-405 to delay all consid-
eration of LGBT-related pro-
posals. Instead, the delegates
created a commission that
will spend at least two years
reviewing policy on the sub-
ject, contained in the Meth-
odist Book of Discipline, with
the goal of developing a plan
to address their differences.
The denomination has 12.7
million members worldwide
and is the third-largest faith
group in the U.S.
“We are at a precipice,”
said Lonnie Chain, a dele-
gate from the Northern Illi-
nois Annual Conference, or
church district, speaking in
favor of forming the commis-
sion. “There is urgency before
us. The church might divide.”
While other mainline Prot-
estant groups, including the
Episcopal Church and the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.),
have approved same-sex mar-
riage, the Methodists have
upheld a policy they adopted
in 1972, calling same-gender
relationships “incompatible
with Christian teaching.”
As gay rights gained accep-
tance in broader society and
in other churches, Method-
ist LGBT advocates stepped
up pressure for the denomi-
nation to lift prohibitions on
ordination for people with
same-sex partners, along with
a ban on gay weddings. How-
ever, the denomination is on a
more conservative path, with
its greatest growth in the U.S.
South and overseas, regions
where conservative views pre-
dominate. Of the 864 delegates
at the Oregon meeting, 30 per-
cent are from Africa.
A recent survey by the
church found about 54 percent
of U.S. pastors and lay peo-
ple in leadership roles agreed
with the church restrictions
on gays and lesbians, although
only 41 percent of congregants
held the same view. The Rev.
Adam Hamilton, who leads
Church of the Resurrection in
Leawood, Kansas, estimates
two-thirds of Methodists are
centrists who could live with
those differences. But Meth-
odist conservatives and liber-
als have become even more
polarized over the years, rais-
ing questions about how they
can stay in the same church.
Matt Berryman, head of
Reconciling Ministries Net-
work, a Methodist LGBT
advocacy group, said the com-
mission plan “signals hope.”
The Rev. Rob Renfroe, presi-
dent of Good News, a caucus
of evangelical Methodists, said
the plan has “some potential to
resolve our differences” but is
“fraught with peril,” depend-
ing partly on whether conser-
vative views will be heard.

CANNON BEACH —
Laura Kaim is headed to the
Cannon Beach Visitor Center
after two years with EO Media
Group as the advertising con-
sultant with the Cannon Beach
Gazette. Kaim will be the lead
information specialist for the
center starting May 31. During
her tenure, she helped grow
advertising sales in the South
County for the Gazette, Sea-
side Signal and Daily Asto-
rian, as well as handling real
estate advertising for all coastal
publications.
Kaim said she looks for-
ward to “a return to chamber
work.”
She worked previously with
the Seaside Chamber of Com-
merce for seven years before
coming to the coastal publica-
tions. Her new job will consist
of greeting visitors and answer-
ing questions for those planning
to come to Cannon Beach.
“Laura’s background as an

owner of her own business in
Seaside, and then seven years at
the Seaside Chamber, gave her
unique insight when consulting
with her clientele for the Can-
non Beach Gazette,” EO Media
Group Advertising Manager
Betty Smith said. “We will miss
her sense of humor and creativ-
ity and wish her well in her new
adventure.”
Kaim lives in Seaside with
her husband, son and daugh-
ter. “I have enjoyed getting to
know Cannon Beach better
through my sales work, and I’m
excited to share that knowledge
with visitors,” Kaim said.

other states including Ken-
tucky which also held a presi-
dential primary on Tuesday.
Gronke and Moore both
said Oregon was likely able to
exceed the million-vote mark
because of excitement about
Democratic presidential pol-
itics. The matchup between
Hillary Clinton and Bernie
Sanders racked up at least
551,230 votes. Write-in candi-
dates received another 10,229
votes.
But Democrat voters
were not as excited with
Tuesday’s contest as they
were in 2008, when Obama,
Clinton and the write-ins
split 638,790 votes.
Nor were they as excited
about Clinton. Although
she lost to Obama in 2008
by 116,000 votes, Clinton
received 15,552 more votes
then than she did Tuesday.
She lost to Sanders 306,957 to
244,273 as of early Wednes-
day afternoon.
Moore said that although

presumptive Republican pres-
idential nominee, nearly 35

percent of Republican voters
cast their ballots for “anyone
but Trump, which is a big issue
for him.”
There were nearly 2.3 mil-
lion eligible voters in this
year’s primary election. That
included more than 100,000
new voters registered in 2016,
according to the Secretary of
State’s Ofice. Many of those
voters were registered as a
result of the state’s new auto-
matic voter registration sys-
tem, which took effect this

year. Under the law, people
who are eligible to vote are
registered after they obtain or
renew their driver’s licenses,
permits or identiication cards.
Oregon was the irst state to
enact an automatic voter regis-
tration law.
It’s too early to know
whether automatically reg-
istered voters turned out in
higher or lower percentages
when compared with other
voters.
On Monday, the Portland
nonproit Bus Project which
pushed for automatic voter reg-
istration claimed on its website
that early ballot returns showed
higher turnout among automat-
ically registered voters. How-
ever, Caroline Cowley of the
Bus Project wrote in an email
that the group will not in-
ish analyzing the full election
results until later this week.
Gronke said many of the
automatically registered vot-
ers might have been excited to
vote in this primary, because it
was the irst time they received
ballots and other election-re-
lated mail from the state. The
true test will be whether they
continue to vote in future elec-
tions, Gronke said.
The high point for voter
turnout, as a percentage of
the total electorate, in Oregon
elections remains the 1960s
and 1970s when as many as
73 percent of registered voters
went to the polls.
