Seen here in an earlier game this season, Astoria’s Carter Wallace slammed two towering home runs in Tuesday’s win
over Clatskanie at Aiken Field.
Wallace homers twice in home win

The Astoria baseball team
is oficially ready for the
post-season, as the Fisher-
men pounded the state’s No.
1-ranked 3A team at Aiken
Field Tuesday afternoon.
Carter Wallace belted two
line-drive home runs, and
four Astoria pitchers scattered
seven hits with 10 strikeouts
and three walks in a 9-4 win
over Rainier.
The Columbians scored two
runs in the top of the irst for an
early lead, but Astoria scored
the next seven runs, highlighted
by a four-run third inning.
Wallace hammered a
Caymon Rea pitch over the
left-center ield fence, and
Ryker Helmersen had a two-
run triple to right.
Wallace added a two-run
shot in the fourth inning to
the same spot, and Trey Hage-
man had a two-run single in
the sixth, after the Columbians
had closed to within 7-4.
Hageman and Wallace
both inished with three RBIs
for the Fishermen, who host

Play-in game Friday at Aiken

Tigers close out the Warriors, 10-3
The Daily Astorian
CLATSKANIE — The
fourth time was not the charm for
the Warrenton Warriors Tuesday.
Facing the end of their sea-
son, the Warriors posted an early
1-0 lead, but the Clatskanie
Tigers answered with eight runs
in their irst three at-bats, on
their way to a 10-3 win.
It was Clatskanie’s fourth
victory over Warrenton this
season, after sweeping the
league season series.
The Tigers collected 12 hits
off two Warrenton pitchers,
while the Warriors commit-
ted four errors, leading to ive
unearned runs.
Meanwhile,
Clatskanie
starter Alex McCallister (who
struck out 13 Warriors in a
win last week) fanned 10 bat-
ters in Tuesday’s win, with ive
walks.
Joe Little was Warrenton’s
only multiple hitter. Michael
Nichols had two doubles,
drove in three runs and scored
twice for Clatskanie. Cole
Warren added a triple.
“We played better,” said
Warrenton coach Lennie
Wolfe. “(The Tigers) just
really hit the ball well, and
we couldn’t come up with the
timely hits.”
Warrenton inishes 9-14
overall.
“I could not be more
proud of how this team
held up, toughed it out and
played through everything,”
said Wolfe, who had just 10
players on the roster for the
majority of the season, and
inished the league season
with nine. A few aches and
pains would normally have
kept a few players out of the
lineup, but the Warriors were
Warriors.
“They battled,” Wolfe said.
“But playing with 10 players
caused us some dificulties,
being short-handed and guys
playing out of position.”
Now the task begins of
replacing players for next sea-
On to state for Lady Warriors
The Daily Astorian
PORTLAND — Warrenton
had eight hits from seven differ-
ent players, and scored sinruns
in four separate innings Tues-
day, on its way to a 4-2 over
Portland Adventist in a Lewis
& Clark League softball playoff.
And now the Warriors (9-17
overall) will head to the state
playoffs, but not before playing
another league playoff 5 p.m.
Thursday at Clatskanie.
In Tuesday’s win, Landree
Miethe had two of Warrenton’s
eight hits, reached base three
times and scored twice.
She also had three of War-
renton’s six stolen bases, while
pitcher Niqui Blodgett threw
a jewel of a game, striking out
ive with one walk and ive hits
allowed.
son, as six of Warrenton’s 10
players Tuesday are seniors.
“That will come later,”
Wolfe said. “Right now my
thoughts are with those six
seniors, and what they gave us
this year. Four of them were
four-year varsity players.”
CRESWELL — Sea-
side senior Aaron Richard-
son ended an illustrious high
school golf career Tuesday,
with a sixth-place inish and
a place on the All-State Tour-
nament team.
Final round action of the
Class 4A state tournament
took place at Emerald Val-
ley Golf Course in Creswell,
where Richardson inished
with a two-round total 160,
good enough for sixth over-
all out of 56 golfers. Richard-
son followed up Monday’s
81 with a 79 Tuesday.
Mazama senior Bryce
Wortman took medalist
honors with 143, followed
by Klamath Union sopho-
more Craig Ronne (147) and
Crook County junior Mayson
Tibbs (149).
Over the course of four
years, Richardson was med-
alist of 17 events, a two-
time all-league player, won
the individual district title
this year, was also a two-
time all-regional player, and
is now a two-time all-state
golfer.
He helped the Gulls win
three league titles and state
titles in 2014 and ’15.
Richardson had his putter
working well on Day 2 of the
tournament. He started the
day with four straight pars
before rolling in a 30-foot
putt for his irst and only
birdie of the tournament
on the toughest hole on the
course.
He went on to shoot three
more pars, hitting tough
putts along the way before
carding his irst bogey of
the day on the 18th hole (his
ninth as he started on the
back nine).
Richardson nearly made
it through the 36-hole tour-
nament with nothing worse
than a bogey. His only mis-
step was a triple bogey on his
second-to-last hole.
Aaron Richardson
“Aaron played a really
smart tournament,” said Sea-
side coach Jim Poetsch. “In
hindsight, his decision to hit
driver on the second-to-last
hole might not have been a
good move, but it was some-
thing we had talked about
during the practice round
should he need it to win the
tournament.
“At that point he had
played well enough to get
on the state tournament team
and really had nothing to
lose, so why not give it a go?
“While I will hate to see
Aaron leave the program, I
am really glad he was able
to end his career with a good
round and another all-state
performance.”
On the team side of the
tournament, Tibbs bird-
ied the inal hole to lead his
team to a state champion-
ship by a single stroke over
Marshield.
Crook County ended the
tournament with a 703 team
score, followed by Marsh-
ield (704), Klamath Union
(716) and Scappoose (720).
The Cowapa League was
well-represented, as Val-
ley Catholic took ifth with
a 722.
Cowapa players Carter
Lee of Tillamook, and Jake
Gray and Nathan Mapes of
Scappoose joined Richard-
son on the all-state team.
