SPORTS 4A Astoria girls run away with Cowapa League title VERNONIA — The Knappa baseball team will enter the 2016 post-season the same way the Loggers left it in 2015 — as the team with the best record at the 2A level. Knappa closed out league play with a 6-2, 7-1 double- header sweep at Vernonia Fri- day, and will head to the play- offs with a 21-1 overall record. Knappa won the league title with a 17-1 mark, well ahead of Neah-Kah-Nie (13-5). In Game 1, “Dale (Takalo) was certainly the story of the game,” said Knappa coach Jeff Miller, as his ace pitcher allowed just two hits (both in the seventh Gary Henley/The Daily Astorian Astoria’s Victoria Kee, center, and Kaylee Mitchell, right, could be scoring lots of points for the Lady Fishermen track team later this week, at the OSAA state meet in Eugene. Freyr in all three events. Astoria is unmatched in the ield events, and will be equally tough on the track. Natalie Cummings will be one of the top contenders in both the 100 and 200 meters at state, as the junior had the win- ning times in both events in Sat- urday’s inals (12.53 and 26.22, respectively). Freshman Gracie Cummings could be her main challenger in Eugene, as Natalie’s young sister inished second in both sprints. Both sisters ran a leg on a winning relay team, as Asto- ria’s foursome of Victoria Kee, Kaylee Mitchell and the Cum- mings’ won the 400-meter relay in 50.13 (second-best in Astoria history). Astoria sophomore Kaylee Mitchell scored big points for the Lady Fish in last year’s state meet, and is the state’s top- ranked runner in the 800 meters this season (and third in the 1,500 meters). Mitchell won Saturday’s 800 (2:23.07), and the 1,500 (4:49.83). There were a few upsets, as Scappoose hurdler Elea- nor Jones managed to beat the favorite coming in, Astoria’s Andrea Harris, in the 100-meter hurdles. On the plus side, Astoria’s Victoria Kee took second in the 100 (16.83, third-best in AHS history), and teammate Nara Van De Grift won the 300-meter hurdles (47.50, also third-best in school history), edging Jones. Scappoose also took irst in the 1,600-meter relay, nip- ping favorite Astoria (4:09.60 to 4:09.97). All of Astoria’s state qualii- ers — with the exception of Kee and Korff — return next season. On the boys’ side, the excit- ing race was the 800, where Astoria’s Lucas Caruana won in 1:59.20, edging Seaside’s Jack- son Januik (1:59.23). The Gulls’ Will Garvin was a double-winner in the hurdles, taking the 110’s in 16.00, and the 300 in 41.23. More wins for Seaside: Jax- son Smith in the long jump (20- 11), and Raiden Bowles in the pole vault (14-1). Other Seaside state qualii- ers are Hunter Thompson (sec- ond in the 1,500) and the 1,600 relay team (Thompson, Januik, Garvin, Juneau Meyer), second behind Tillamook. Smith was also second in the high jump. Besides Caruana, other Asto- ria state qualiiers are Tim Bar- nett (second in the discus) and Zander Arnold (second in the shot put). inning), with 16 strikeouts and one walk. “That was the best I’ve seen him throw, by far,” said Miller, who now has 299 career coach- ing victories. “Even though we didn’t score a lot of runs, it was one of those game where we felt safe because he was on the mound.” Knappa had all the runs it would need after two innings, with a 3-0 lead. Jason Miller had three of Knappa’s 10 hits, while Reuben Cruz belted his sixth home run of the season. Twenty-one of Cruz’s 29 hits this year have been for extra bases. Logan Bartlett was 2-for-2 with a double. Knappa took another no-hit- ter into the seventh inning of Game 2, as Michal Goodman inished with a one-hitter, with eight strikeouts and one walk. Vernonia’s Brett Elliott broke up both no-hitters, with leadoff singles in the seventh inning of both games. Miller, Takalo and Andrew Goozee all had two hits apiece in Game 2 for Knappa, which will have a week off before opening the state playoffs. The Loggers will have home ield advantage in the playoffs, all the way until to the inal, June 3 at Volcanoes Stadium. (Knappa’s nonleague game Tuesday with Rainier was can- celed. HELENS — The Asto- ria girls were just warming up for their state title run later this week, easily outdistancing in the rest of the ield in the Cowapa League Championships, Thurs- day and Friday at St. Helens High School. While Scappoose won the boys’ league championship with 145 points, the Lady Fishermen racked up a whopping 234 to take the girls’ team title for the second year in a row, well ahead of sec- ond-place Scappoose (143). Astoria has the potential to score a record number of points in the state meet, which begins Thursday in Eugene (4A com- petition takes place Friday and Saturday). The Lady Fishermen won 13 of the 17 events in the league meet, hosted by Scappoose. The big point-scorers were the usuals for the Lady Fishermen. Darian Hagemen won all four events in the jumps, which included marks of 5-feet, 7 inches in the high jump (tying her school record); 18-3 in the long jump (a half-inch off Char- lene Harber’s school mark); 37-6½ in the triple jump, and she cleared 10-6 in the pole vault. Joining her at state will be teammates Daisy Gayral in the triple jump (33-10½) and Shrida Sharma in the pole vault (9-6). Also favored to win state titles later this week will be junior Skadi Freyr, the top- ranked thrower in the shot put, and one of the tops in the discus and javelin. Freyr won all three last week, highlighted by a throw of 129-11 in the javelin, and win- ning marks in the discus (113-6) and shot put (40-7½). The Tigers also swept the three-game league season series with the Warriors.
