Trump, Ryan, pledge to work together
Endorsement
may be close
By ERICA WERNER
AP Congressional
Correspondent
WASHINGTON — Don-
ald Trump and House Speaker
Paul Ryan pledged to work
together despite their differ-
ences after a meeting Thursday
aimed unifying a party torn
over Trump’s rise to the cusp
of the Republican presiden-
tial nomination. The speaker
appeared closer to offering a
full-throated endorsement.
Trump and Ryan issued
a statement describing their
meeting as a “very positive
step toward uniication” that
recognized “many important
areas of common ground” as
well as areas where they dis-
agree. Ryan stunned Repub-
licans by withholding his
endorsement a week ago when
it became clear Trump was on
a irm path to the nomination.
The
much-anticipated
meeting unfolded Thursday
morning as more Republicans
have begun urging the party
to put the extraordinary dis-
cord behind. The statement
by the two suggested both are
invested in tamping down the
Republican inighting as they
try to pull the GOP together for
the ight against Hillary Clin-
ton and Democrats in the fall.
Ryan told a news confer-
ence they are “planting the
seeds” to accomplish that.
Republican Rep. Lee Zel-
din of New York, a Trump
supporter, said it will help both
the candidate and the speaker
if they can work through their
differences.
“I don’t think it’s do or die,
any endorsement in particu-
lar,” he said outside the build-
ing. But “Donald Trump’s can-
didacy is strengthened with an
endorsement from the most
powerful person, top-ranking
Republican in the country. It
helps.”
On the eve of the meet-
ings, Trump eased his deiant
tone of recent days. Asked on
Fox News who leads the party
in his view, he said Ryan. “I
would say Paul for the time
being and maybe for a long
time,” he said.
“We can always have dif-
ferences,” he said. “If you
agree on 70 percent, that’s
always a lot.”

heal itself after a bruising pri-
mary season or face irrevoca-
ble rupture.
Trump, for years a regis-
tered Democrat, has offended
women, Hispanics, and others
while violating establishment
party orthodoxy on numerous
issues Ryan holds dear, from
trade to wages to religious
freedom. Ryan, a policy-fo-
cused conservative, insists the
GOP must be a party of ideas,
and has championed an agenda
that has drawn Trump’s scorn
by pushing cuts in Medi-
care and other government
programs.
Indeed, a broader swath
of Republican voters appears
to be moving behind Trump,
despite big-name holdouts
such as Ryan, both former
president Bushes and the par-
ty’s 2012 nominee, Mitt Rom-
ney. Romney went after Trump
on Wednesday over his refusal
thus far to release his taxes,
calling it “disqualifying” and
asserting that the only expla-
nation must be “a bombshell
of unusual size.”
Still, almost two in three
Republican-leaning
voters
now view Trump favorably,
compared with 31 percent who
view him unfavorably, accord-
ing to a national Gallup Poll
taken last week. The numbers
represent a near total reversal
from Gallup’s survey in early
March.
And on Capitol Hill, where
Ryan has managed to remain
popular since taking over
as speaker in the fall, some
Republicans made clear that
they would like to see him
come around to supporting
Trump sooner rather than later.
Rep. Tom Cole of Okla-
homa, an ally of GOP leader-
ship, said Thursday his biggest
worry about Trump is that he
is “‘unpredictable.” Yet Trump
is also a “change agent,” Cole
said. “That’s exactly what peo-
ple want right now, so in that
sense he’s very well-posi-
tioned for a general election.”
“It seems to me they have
every incentive to ind com-
mon ground,” he said of
Trump and Ryan, “because to
be successful they both in a
sense need one another.”
Three meetings were on
tap for Trump: the one with
Ryan and the party chairman,
then with Ryan joined by other
senior House GOP leaders
and one with Senate Majority
Leader Mitch McConnell and
other top Senate Republicans.
McConnell was quick to
embrace the mogul after he
clinched the nomination and
said this week that Trump is
looking like he’ll be “very
competitive” in November.
Oregon to begin new
science standards
and new test in 2018
The Associated Press
BEND — Oregon schools
will begin teaching new sci-
ence standards and plans to
introduce a new science test in
2018.
Oregon has begun phasing
in the new Next Generation
Science Standards, which are
used by 18 states and empha-
size hands-on learning and con-
cepts such as cause and effect
or stability and change, The
Bulletin of Bend reported.
The new standards, which
replace Oregon Assessment of
Knowledge and Skills, were
adopted in 2014. Oficials say
it’s too soon to tell what the
tests will look like, but that the
standards move away from
memorization.
“Because there is the expec-
tation of higher-level thinking
skills and the opportunity for
students to demonstrate what
they know, we would expect
that the test would be more
than a straight multiple-choice
test, which is what we have
now,” said Derek Brown, direc-
tor of assessment at the Ore-
gon Department of Education,
of moving tot eh Smarter Bal-
anced tests.

US senators want air pollution
reduced at ports and railyards
The Associated Press
NEWARK, N.J. — A
group of U.S. senators, all
Democrats, are asking fed-
eral regulators to do more to
cut air pollution around port
cities and railyards.
New Jersey Sens. Bob
Menendez and Cory Booker
joined New York Sen. Kirsten
Gillibrand, Illinois Sen. Dick
Durbin and Oregon Sen. Jeff
Merkley on Wednesday in
a letter urging the Environ-
mental Protection Agency to
reduce emissions at ports and
freight railyards.
“The large volumes of air
pollutants, such as nitrogen
oxides and particulate matter
emitted by heavy duty die-
sel trucks, ocean-going ves-
sels, cargo handling equip-
ment, railroad locomotives
and harbor craft are heavily

grade, once in sixth through
ninth grade and once in 10th
through 12th grade. That will
continue under the new federal
education law.
The science standards pair
with the state’s Smarter Bal-
anced tests for English lan-
guage arts and math, which
debuted last year. Previously,
schools used the old test for
science.
Oregon Department of Edu-
cation oficials said the delay
between the new standards
and introducing the test is typ-
ical. Brown said the new sci-
ence standards have not faced
as much pushback as Common
Core, but with Common Core
the conversation shifted to the
negative as schools came closer
to handing out an assessment.
Though students are still
taking the Oregon Assessment
of Knowledge tests, Paciic
Crest Middle School science
teacher Sara Trakselis, of Bend,
said she won’t focus on the
results. Instead she has been
developing tests for the new
standards, where students must
interpret data, investigate pat-
terns, create models and ind
explanations.
“They’re harder to write
and they’re harder to grade, but
they’re better for the kids,” she

concentrated in the commu-
nities,” the lawmakers wrote
in a letter to EPA administra-
tor Gina McCarthy.
The lawmakers said
many of the ports and rail-
yards are located near low-
er-income neighborhoods
and those residents are dis-
proportionately exposed to
high levels of air pollution
resulting in serious health
problems.
“The impacts, espe-
cially on children, result
in increased risk for can-
cer, missed school days and
more hospital visits,” the
lawmakers said.
They urged the EPA to act
before the end of the Obama
administration to promote
the use of zero-emissions
transportation technology
and to minimize freight
emissions.
