Indians capture Cowapa golf title

WARRENTON — Morgan
Hall of Scappoose won med-
alist honors, and also led the
Indians to a team title Tues-
day, in the Cowapa League
girls golf championships at the
Astoria Golf & Country Club.
Hall inished with a 95 to
inish one stroke ahead of Val-
ley Catholic’s Matti Thurman,
while Scappoose carded a 414
team score, to the Valiants’
418.
Astoria was third at 466,
followed by Seaside (577) and
Tillamook (643).
Seaside’s Caroline Kotson
posted a 99 to tie for third with
Isabel Jory of Scappoose.

highlighted her day with a

It was the second win for
the Braves over the Fishermen
in ive days, and gives Banks a
9-1 record in league play. The
Braves hold a one-game lead
over Valley Catholic (8-2), with
Scappoose (6-4) third and Asto-
ria (5-5) fourth.
All four teams are ranked in
the top 13 in the latest OSAA
rankings.
Coming off a 7-0 loss to the
No. 2-ranked Braves last Friday,
the Fishermen jumped out to a
much better start in Tuesday’s
contest.
Astoria’s Kyle Strange belted
David Schorn’s third pitch of the
game over the left ield fence for
a quick 1-0 lead.
And thanks to some ine
pitching and defensive play by
the Fish, that’s where it stayed
through four innings.
Following back-to-back base
hits by Jake Evans and Dakota
Bunn in the top of the second,
the Braves had runners at sec-
ond and third with no outs.

Knappa Loggers “Cruzed” to a 7-0 win over
the Falcons in Northwest League baseball
action.
Knappa sophomore Reuben Cruz — a
leading candidate for Class 2A Player of the
Year — had a double and a triple for the Log-
gers, who led 4-0 after three innings.
Pitcher Dale Takalo did the rest, allowing
just two hits with 11 strikeouts and no walks
in six innings of work.
A double by Mante Woods scored Owen
Parsons with the go-ahead run. Seaside went
down in order in the bottom of the seventh.
In other Cowapa League baseball action
Tuesday, Valley Catholic defeated Tillamook,
20-14.
Seaside’s Caroline Kotson shot a 99, tied for third overall
and made the Cowapa League’s first team all-league team
following her round Tuesday.

RAINIER — Rainier scored nine runs in
its inal three at-bats Tuesday, to defeat War-
renton 10-0 in a Lewis & Clark League base-
ball game.
The Warriors lost irst baseman Hunter
Wilson to a thumb injury early in the game,
which resulted in a reshufled defensive lineup
for the Warriors — leading in part to six errors
and eight unearned runs for the Columbians.
Caymon Rea got the complete-game win
for Rainier, allowing just three hits.
Ryan Schmunk had a double and a triple
for the Columbians, who improve to 9-0 in
league play.
RAINIER — Warrenton held a 1-0 lead
after a half-inning Tuesday, but Rainier rallied
for a 12-1 win over the Warriors in a Lewis &
Clark League softball game.
Rainier’s Kami Gray, Sarah Probasco and
Jadyn Crape teamed up for eight hits (ive for
extra bases), six runs and six RBIs.
Warrenton’s Landree Miethe had the lone
Warrior hit, a leadoff single in the irst inning.
She later scored on an error.
Rainier answered with three runs in the
bottom of the irst, and scored multiple runs in
the third, fourth, ifth and sixth.
Gray drove in four runs with a double and a
triple, and Probasco had a double and a home
run.
Probasco was also the winning pitcher,
allowing just one hit with 14 strikeouts and
two walks.

Schorn also buckled down
after the irst inning, and the
game quickly turned into a
pitcher’s duel.
Schorn struck out the side in
the bottom of the second, and
retired the side in order in the
third.
Meanwhile, Astoria senior
catcher Ryker Helmersen was
helping Fremstad keep the
Braves off the scoreboard.
Leadoff batters for Banks
reached base in both the third
and fourth innings, but Helm-
ersen gunned down both on
steal attempts.
Astoria outielder Cade
O’Brien also made one of his
patented diving catches in cen-
ter ield to take away another
hit.
The Braves inally broke
through in the top of the ifth.
Logan St. Marie had a lead-
off single, and Kylan Taylor
reached on an inield hit to put
two runners on.
After a pitching change,
the Braves’ Gunnar Partain
reached on an error, and Casey
McGough delivered the biggest
hit of the day, a double off the
center ield fence to score two
runs.
Partain scored moments later
on a groundout for a 3-1 lead.
McGough — the Braves’
catcher — turned in a big defen-
sive play of his own in the bot-
tom of the ifth.
Tyler Lyngstad drew a lead-
off walk, and with pinch-runner
Jasyn Gohl running on a bunt
attempt by O’Brien, McGough
grabbed a foul tip off O’Brien
bat, and ired to irst for a dou-
ble play.
And it saved a run for the
Braves, because Astoria’s next
batter, Strange, belted his sec-
ond home run of the day to deep
left ield.
Banks tacked on a run in
the sixth, when Bunn drew a
one-out walk, stole second and
scored on two straight wild
pitches for a two-run lead.
And that was plenty for
Schorn, who retired seven of the
inal eight batters he faced, strik-
ing out two in the seventh to in-
ish with 11 strikeouts and four
walks.
Astoria’s only other hit was
a fourth-inning double by Sam-
boy Tuimato.
The Fishermen host Scap-
poose at 5 p.m. today.
Scappoose rally
defeats Gulls
SEASIDE — The Seaside Gulls were
three outs away from one of their biggest
wins in years … but the Scappoose Indians
overcame a 9-4 deicit after six innings with
six runs in the top of the seventh, on their
way to a 10-9 win over the Gulls at Broad-
way Field Tuesday.
After giving up two runs in the top of the
irst, Seaside scored one run in its irst at-bat,
then scored four in the second and four more in
the third, highlighted by back-to-back singles
from Dawson Blanchard and Astor Landwehr
to start the second.
A line drive single by Payton Westerholm
brought in Landwehr, and the Gulls took
advantage of Scappoose errors to built a 5-2
lead.
Seaside pushed the lead to 9-2 in the third,
with run-scoring hits by Landwehr and Dun-
can Thompson.
Starter Scott Plampin held the Indians
scoreless in the second, third and fourth, before
giving up a run each in the ifth and sixth.
In their big seventh-inning rally, the Indi-
ans took advantage of six walks by two Sea-
side pitchers, and J.C. Gross highlighted the
inning with a two-out, game-tying grand slam
home run.

SCAPPOOSE — After a narrow 4-1 win
over Astoria in Game 1 of a doubleheader
April 15, the Scappoose Indians have now out-
scored the Lady Fishermen 35-0 in the last two
meetings, including a 15-0 victory Tuesday in
Scappoose.
The Indians won Game 2 of the April 15
doubleheader 20-0, and scored ive runs in
each of the irst three innings Tuesday.
Astoria had just two hits (Rylee DeMander
and Mykka Abrahams) off Scappoose pitcher
Kendal Bailey, who struck out 11 batters with
two walks.
Scappoose takes over sole possession of
second place in the league standings at 8-2,
while Astoria falls to 6-4.
Scappoose senior Sage Harrison blasted
two home runs, and inished with ive RBIs
and three runs scored. She homered in the irst
and second innings.
Scappoose sophomore Hannah Galey had
two doubles, a home run and drove in three
runs for the Indians, who inished with 16 hits
in four at-bats.
Astoria plays a doubleheader Friday at Sea-
side. Game 1 starts at 5 p.m. The Gulls posted
a 3-2 Valley Catholic Tuesday.
