SPORTS THE DAILY ASTORIAN • TUESDAY, MAY 3, 2016 5A Seaside golf: League champs, again The Daily Astorian WARRENTON — The Seaside boys golf pro- gram added another Cowapa League title to its long list of accomplishments, as the Gulls won Monday’s league tourna- ment by a narrow 16 strokes. Seaside carded a 350 team score to inish ahead of Scap- poose (366) to win the league championship, hosted by Astoria at the Astoria Golf & Country Club. Seaside’s irst-place inish — coupled with their annual undefeated record in dual matches — gives the Gulls their third straight Cowapa League title. Seaside senior Aaron Richardson won medal- ist honors, scoring a sev- en-stroke victory over last year’s medalist, Carter Lee of Tillamook. State qualiiers will be decided in next week’s Regional tournament, and after that, the Gulls will set their sights on a third straight state title at the Class 4A level. Richardson shot a 4-over par 76 in Monday’s round, the only player to break 80. Lee was second with an 83 followed by Nathan Mapes of Scappoose with an 86. Miltich. “It is nice to see Aaron earn a league title,” said Sea- side coach Jim Poetsch. “He has worked hard for four years and really deserved this one. I missed seeing his over- the-tree Eagle on No. 11, but witnessed his birdie on 16 and his 45-foot birdie putt to end his round.” Richardson had back-to- back doubles at the turn, “but played the rest of the course at even par,” Poetsch said. “Berkley and Jackson making all-league was also a good reward for their hard work,” he added. “Our team score wasn’t great but good scores were hard to come by today with the wind and super-fast greens. We’ve got a week to polish our games a little and hopefully we will score a bit better at next week’s regional tournament.” Golden State to set tone with defense in Game 2 By JANIE MCCAULEY AP Sports Writer OAKLAND, Calif. — Andrew Bogut has taken to publicly calling himself unlattering names. Such was his mood Mon- day when someone inquired about the Golden State cen- ter often appearing mean and nasty. He used another word to basically refer to himself as a jerk — “100 percent,” he said. As long as Bogut and the defending champion War- riors keep playing the kind of defense that has helped them set the tone so far in these playoffs without MVP Ste- phen Curry, he won’t even mind if anybody else uses those words to describe him either. Bogut’s two early blocks got Golden State going during Sunday’s 118-106 win against the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 1 of the Western Conference semiinals. The teams resume their best-of- seven series Tuesday night in Oakland. Also Tuesday, the Toronto Raptors host the Miami Heat in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semiinal. The Warriors again will try to establish an energy and presence on the defensive end from the start. They know their offense will come given this team’s depth and many playmakers. “It’s very important we don’t give up just layups early in the game,” Bogut said. “We’re trying to protect the paint and make sure they get nothing easy early.” Bogut wound up with 10 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks, and the Warriors have proven they are still a domi- nant team without Curry, who could return from a sprained right knee as soon as Satur- day’s Game 3 in Portland. The Warriors, 6-9 overall, play at Rainier today, followed by a doubleheader Friday at Portland Christian. In Monday’s win, War- renton snapped a 1-1 tie with ive runs in the top of the third inning, then tacked on two in the fourth for an 8-1 lead. David Foster led Warren- ton’s 12-hit attack with three hits, while Matt Burgher was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in his irst career start, and Anthony Cochran drove in two runs and was 2-for-4. “One thing that really pleases me with this group, is that they’re so willing to give themselves up to score a run,” said Warrenton coach Lennie Wolfe, who recorded career win No. 498. “They’ll give us a ground ball up the mid- dle or whatever is needed to advance the runner, and it’s nice when your players work hard, they’re selless and not playing for themselves.” Gavon McFadden started and pitched the irst four innings to pick up the victory, before giving way to Joe Little and Dalton Knight. Brandon Sparks, Michael Aguayo and Zac Tapio pitched for Ilwaco, which had four hits and committed three errors. Indians defeat Gulls, 15-1 The Daily Astorian SCAPPOOSE — A post- poned game last week has resulted in three games in three days for both the Scappoose and Seaside baseball teams. The two teams kicked off a big week Monday at Scap- poose, where the Indians scored four runs in their irst at-bat, on their way to a 15-1 win over the Gulls. Gus Nelson started and pitched four innings for Scap- poose, with Kyler Alioth toss- ing the inal inning. Otto Hoekstre and Scott Plampin had the only two hits for the Gulls. Hunter Holma- son had a double, triple, two RBIs and four runs scored for Scappoose. Seaside hosts Scappoose today, 5 p.m. at Broadway Field. The Gulls host Valley Catholic Wednesday, while Scappoose returns to the North Coast for a single game at Astoria Wednesday.
