Lady Fishermen warm up for state title run
By GARY HENLEY
The Daily Astorian
GLADSTONE — The
Astoria girls track team has
entered the “trophy round” of
the 2016 season, as the Lady
Fish collected the irst of what
is almost certain to be three
team championships in a one-
month span.
The Astoria girls took irst
in the annual Dick Baker Invi-
tational at Gladstone Saturday,
scoring 164 team points to far
outdistance the competition.
Molalla was second with
92.5 points. On the boys’ side,
Seaside was fourth behind Red-
mond, Central and North Bend.
Huge favorites to win the
Cowapa League championship
as well as the Class 4A team title
at the state meet May 20-21, the
Lady Fishermen won nine of the
17 events Saturday, and added
big points with several second-
and third-place inishes.
Sophomore Darian Hage-
man — ranked irst in all four of
her events — won two events.
Hageman soared 36 feet, 5
inches to win the triple jump; and
cleared 5-5 to take the high jump.
She was second (16-7) in
the long jump; and equaled her
school record (11-0) for third in
the pole vault (Audrey Bright of
Putnam won at 11-4).
There was more Asto-
ria domination on the track, as
Natalie Cummings swept the
sprints, winning the 100 meters
in 12.76, ahead of sister Gracie

Astoria softball moves into second place
The Daily Astorian
The Astoria softball team just
keeps rackin’ up the wins — and
the Lady Fishermen are oficially
unbeatable when they’re down by a
run going into their inal at-bat.
Astoria picked up two more vic-
tories Friday — one easy, one not
— in a 10-0, 6-5 sweep over Til-
lamook, which vaults Astoria into
second place in the Cowapa League
standings.
Astoria’s 12 overall victo-
ries (unoficially) equals the most
in school history, and the Fisher-
men still have eight regular sea-
son games remaining, plus the state
playoffs.
Astoria was iring on all cylin-
ders in Friday’s opener.
Pitcher Libby DiBartolomeo
tossed a one-hitter, and inished
with four strikeouts and a walk.
The Fishermen had all the runs
they would need after one inning, as
the irst three batters reached base.
Rylee DeMander and Kelsey Wull-
ger both had run-scoring singles for
a 3-0 lead.
Astoria tacked on six runs in
the second, with RBI hits from
DeMander, Caitlyn Hougham
and Mykka Abrahams. The Chee-
semakers, meanwhile, had three
costly errors in the inning.
Jennifer Tuatagaloa had Tilla-
mook’s lone hit in the fourth inning.
The Mooks bounced back in
Game 2, despite falling behind
early.
Astoria scored four runs in the
irst on just one hit, with help from
two hit batters, two errors and two
wild pitches.
Tillamook answered with three
runs in the top of the second, then
after four scoreless innings, the
Cheesemakers scored one in the
seventh to tie, when Madison
Reeves raced home on a wild pitch
with two outs on a 1-2 count to
Lexie Zuercher.
Both teams failed to score in the
eighth, and the Cheesemakers took
their only lead of the day in the top of
the ninth, when Tuatagaloa’s single
drove in Abby Doud for a 5-4 lead.
The Lady Fish wasted little
time, however, in the bottom of the
inning.
Taylor Mickle had a leadoff tri-
ple on a misplayed ly ball to center,
then scored on a triple to right from
DeMander.
With one out, Abrahams ended
the game with a ly ball to center,
deep enough to score DeMander
with the game-winner.
Astoria had 10 hits in Game 2,
four for extra bases, while pitchers
McKailyn Rogers, DeMander and
DiBartolomeo combined to limit
Tillamook to just four hits, with six
strikeouts and ive walks.
Mickle had a double, triple
and was hit by two pitches, while
DeMander was 4-for-4 in Game 1
with a double.
Astoria returns to action Tues-
day at Scappoose.

Bobcats and Loggers split twinbill
The Daily Astorian
CLOVERDALE — The longest
unbeaten streak in Oregon high school base-
ball came to a close Friday in Cloverdale,
where Nestucca and Knappa split a North-
west League doubleheader.
The Loggers opened with a 17-1 win,
before the Bobcats pulled off a 9-6 victory
in Game 2, ending Knappa’s 42-game win
streak, 57 straight wins in league play.
Knappa scored in ive of the six innings
in Game 1, in which Andrew Goozee was
2-for-4 with three RBIs and a double. Jason
Miller added a double and scored three times,
and Reuben Cruz belted a home run.
The Loggers led 10-0 through ive
innings, then scored seven in the sixth.
Dale Takalo (nine strikeouts, one walk,
two hits allowed) got the Game 1 win.
Three Nestucca pitchers gave up 11 hits,
with nine walks and four hit batters, and the
Bobcats committed six errors.
In Game 2, the top four batters in the
Nestucca lineup combined for 10 hits, led
by Noah Geil (3-for-4, two RBIs) and Oli
Samek (3-for-3, two RBIs).
Wyatt Link was 2-for-3 with two RBIs,
and leadoff hitter Cole Strober was 2-for-3
with three runs scored.
Knappa’s big hitter was Cruz, who went
3-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored.
Cruz had two doubles and a home run, and
Noah Kinney had his irst career homer for
the Loggers.
Strober started and went the distance on
the mound, giving up six hits with ive strike-
outs and a walk.
“To (Strober’s) credit, he stayed focus,”
said Knappa coach Jeff Miller. “They were
coming off a 17-1 loss in the irst game and
he gave up a three-run homer in the irst
inning of Game 2, but he didn’t get down.
“And they made the plays they had to,” he
said of the Bobcats. “We hit the ball, it was just
pop-up after pop-up (13 ly-outs). Nestucca
played error-free, lawless defense.”
The Loggers play three games vs. Faith
Bible this week, including a Tuesday contest
at Hillsboro Hops Stadium, 7 p.m. start.
