Two students at Clatsop Community Col-
lege, Alec Chapa and Georges Oates Larson,
presented philosophy papers at the Paciic Uni-
versity Undergraduate Philosophy Conference,
which took place April 15 and 16. The confer-
ence is one of the largest undergraduate philos-
ophy conferences in the country. Ninety-eight
papers were presented, and students from 30
states and ive different countries participated.
Chapa’s essay, “Beyond Marxist Revolution:
A New Consciousness,” compares the philoso-
phies of Karl Marx and M.K. Gandhi to inves-
tigate the role of violence and nonviolence in
political revolutions.
Larson’s paper, “Eternal Recurrence and the
Identity of Indiscernibles,” looks at Friedrich
Nietzsche’s idea of eternal recurrence, and then
investigates what identity might mean in such a
situation, using the work of mathematician phi-
losopher Max Black.
Chapa and Larson were the only community
college students presenting papers, according to
Seth Tichenor, CCC philosophy, religion and pol-
itics instructor. “It’s quite an honor for them to get
to present at this conference,” he added. “I was
very proud of them. They went toe to toe, philo-
sophical speaking, with some very gifted under-
grads from all over the country, and the world.”
