Arnsdorf ires no-hitter at the Gulls
By GARY HENLEY
The Daily Astorian
The most one-sided Clat-
sop Clash — at least for the
last decade — has undoubt-
edly been baseball, where the
Astoria Fishermen this week
celebrated 10 years of Clat-
sop Clash winning without a
loss.
Following
Tuesday’s
12-0 win for the Fishermen,
Wednesday’s 11-0 victory at
Broadway Field was Asto-
ria’s 30th straight win over
the Gulls, who last defeated
the Fishermen April 13,
2006.
The game was close for a
while — Astoria led just 2-0
through ive innings — but
win No. 30 turned out pretty
much like the last 29, as Asto-
ria scored nine runs in the top
of the sixth to pull away.
Seventeen of Astoria’s 30
straight wins have been by
10-plus runs.
Highlighting Wednesday’s
victory was junior pitcher
Jackson Arnsdorf, who threw
a six-inning no-hitter, allow-
ing only two walks in the bot-
tom of the sixth. The Gulls
had another batter reach base
on a dropped ball, third strike.
Other than that, “Arny”
struck out eight in the win,
retiring 12 in a row at one
point. He threw just 76
pitches, and faced 19 batters.
“We’re coming along,”
said Astoria coach Dave Gas-
ser. “If we can pitch and play
defense like we have been, we
can play with anybody. We
just need to get the bats going,
and we’ll be ine.”
Offensively, Ryker Helm-
ersen had two singles to go
with a bases-loaded, bases
clearing double in the sixth.
Samboy Tuimato had a
single and led off Astoria’s
big inning with an inside-
the-park home run. Later in
the inning, he was hit by a
pitch with the bases loaded
Astoria’s Ryan Palek makes contact with a pitch in the
second inning of the baseball game against Seaside at
Broadway Field on Wednesday.

Kyle Strange and Jasyn
Gohl also had two hits apiece
for Astoria, while outielder
Cade O’Brien saved Arns-
dorf’s no-no with a diving
catch in center ield for the
irst out in the bottom of the
sixth.
Said Gasser, “Wasn’t that
a great web-gem to save a
no-hitter? He’s a great ielder,
and he always gets a great
jump on the ball.”
Seaside starting pitcher
Scott Plampin had allowed
just four singles through ive
innings, before the Fishermen
got the bats going in the sixth.
Jake Bassett and Brent Walsh
both pitched in the sixth
inning for the Gulls.
The Fishermen (5-3 in
league) can now focus on
their biggest game of the sea-
son to this point, a key Cow-
apa League showdown Fri-
day at irst place Banks (7-1
in league). The winner could
have an inside track to a
league title.
“It wasn’t a luke that Jack-
son was effective tonight,”
Gasser said. “He’s a big
6’4” righty who can throw.
We’ve got four solid pitch-
ers, and to be honest, I like
our defense and I like our
pitching. We’ve only given up
one hit in our two games this
week, and I like the matchup
we’ll have Friday, with Tyler
(Lyngstad).”
