Cougs split with Warriors
The Daily Astorian
PORTLAND — The Port-
land Adventist and Warren-
ton softball teams split a pair
of 7-3 games Thursday in Port-
land, in a Lewis & Clark League
doubleheader.
Portland Adventist won the
opener, 7-3, before the Warriors
bounced back with a 7-3 win in
Game 2.
Warrenton pitcher Niqui
Blodgett only gave up eight
hits in the win, with six strike-
outs and two walks.
The Warriors had 11 hits off
Portland Adventist pitcher Tori
Johnson, who had defeated War-
renton in Game 1.
Landree Miethe led the War-
rior attack by going 3-for-3 with
three runs scored, while Warren-
ton had 11 stolen bases.
Miethe highlighted her day
with a home run in the sixth
inning, and Blodgett added a tri-
ple, as nine different players had
hits for the Warriors.
Tied 1-1 through three
innings, Warrenton scored twice
in the fourth inning and added
three in the fifth.
In Game 1, Portland Adven-
tist scored four runs in the bot-
tom of the first, and finished
with nine hits off Blodgett.
Miethe was 2-for-3 and
scored twice, but Johnson gave
up only three other hits, with
eight strikeouts and no walks.
Johnson struck out 19 batters
on the day.
She also hit a home run and
scored three times in the opener.
Gulls close in on league title
The Daily Astorian
GEARHART — The only
team with a slight chance of
defeating Seaside in league play
fell 21 strokes short Thursday
afternoon, as the Gulls defeated
Scappoose 341-362 in a Cow-
apa League boys golf match at
Gearhart Golf Links.
Combined, Scappoose and
Seaside have won the last 12
league titles, and the Gulls will
be the favorites to make it 13
next month.
Seaside senior Aaron Rich-
ardson was medalist, shooting a
79. Sophomore Jackson Kunde
added a career-low 83 for the
Gulls, followed by Josef Bar-
bic (89) and Berkley Posalski
(90). Colby Lupfer shot 105 as
the Seaside’s fifth score. Nathan
Mapes led the Indians with an 84.
“It is nice getting a win in this
matchup,” said Seaside coach
Jim Poetsch. “Scappoose is a
good team. But our kids have
been putting in a lot of time to
get better and are starting to build
some confidence in their games.
“The confidence that they
can overcome bad shots is a
needed ingredient for a success-
ful team,” he said. “Aaron did
not have his best ball striking
game of the year but was able
to grind out a 79 and win medal-
ist honors for the fourth time in
four league matches.”
Poetsch added, “Jackson
had a career day, but I see him
scoring even lower in the near
future. He went the whole day
without anything worse than a
bogey, which is one of the things
we’ve talked about needing to
do to improve our scores.”
The Gulls host the 11-team
Seaside Invitational at Astoria
Golf & Country Club Monday.
Fishermen hold off the Cheesemakers

TILLAMOOK — Asto-
ria held off a late rally by Til-
lamook Thursday, and left with
a 3-2 win over the Cheesemak-
ers in a Cowapa League base-
ball contest.
Astoria pitcher Tyler Lyngs-
tad took a no-hitter into the sev-
enth inning, before Tillamook’s
Riley Maloney broke up the
no-hit bid.
The Cheesemakers pulled to
within one run and finished with
four hits, before the Fishermen
were able to close out the win.
Carter Wallace recorded the
final two outs in relief to pick up
the save.
Lyngstad allowed three
hits with seven strikeouts and
three walks, while Astoria had
six hits off Tillamook pitcher
Erik Reeves (eight strikeouts,
five walks), who took the com-
plete-game loss.
Leadoff batter Kyle Strange
had three of Astoria’s six hits,
while Ryker Helmersen was
2-for-3. Ole Englund had the
lone RBI for the Fishermen, and
also scored a run.
