Lady Fishermen win fourth straight game
By GARY HENLEY
The Daily Astorian
A 5-4 win over Corbett
Monday is just another sign
that things are improving for
the Astoria softball program.
The Lady Fishermen —
currently ranked No. 2 in
the latest OSAA rankings —
won their ¿fth game of the
season in the nonleague con-
test at CMH Field, nearly one
year to the day that Corbett
defeated Astoria, 9-4.
Astoria improves to 5-1
overall — just one victory
away from their win total of
2015, when the Fishermen
¿nished -19.
The Lady Fish held a 5-1
lead through six innings, then
overcame three errors in a
three-run seventh inning for
the Cardinals, who had the
tying run at second base when
the ¿nal out was recorded.
The victory was also the
fourth in a row for Astoria —
the ¿rst time since 2009 that
the Lady Fish have won four
straight Astoria won ¿ve in a
row in ’09).
Astoria plays a sin-
gle game at North Marion
Wednesday.
After Corbett scored a run
in the top of the ¿rst, Asto-
ria answered with a two-
out double by Libby DiBar-
tolomeo in the bottom of the
inning. An error moments
later allowed DiBartolomeo
to score the tying run.
Astoria’s senior pitcher
then went to work in the cir-
cle, as DiBartolomeo gave
up very little after the ¿rst
inning.
Corbett’s leadoff batter
reached base in the second,
third and fourth innings, but
DiBartolomeo worked her
way out of a few jams to pre-
vent any runs.
Nicole Herge had a lead-
off triple for the Cards in
the third, but DiBartolomeo
struck out three in a row to
end the inning; she retired
three straight after a lead-
off single in the fourth; and
retired the side in order in the
¿fth and sixth innings.
The hard-throwing right-
hander scattered seven hits,
with one walk and eight
strikeouts to pick up the win.
Meanwhile, the Fisher-
men took advantage of a
Corbett pitching change in
the second inning, as starter
Abigail Fritz left with a foot
injury.

Astoria’s Kelsey Wullger catches a throw at first to get the Corbett runner out in the seventh inning.
Hannah Merrill gave up
a bases-loaded walk, and
a second run scored on a
wild pitch. A ground ball by
DiBartolomeo scored Sarah
Lertora for a 4-1 lead.
The Lady Fish tacked on
what turned out to be a much-
needed run in the ¿fth, as
DiBartolomeo reached on an
in¿eld single and took sec-
ond on an error, then scored
on Mykka Abrahams’ double
to left-center ¿eld.
Kara Moritz took the loss
for the Cardinals, despite
striking out seven with one
walk.
