Lumberjacks chop out a win over Fishermen
The Daily Astorian
It’s tough to go from basketball to
baseball in just four days, as the Asto-
ria Fishermen showed Wednesday
afternoon.
In Astoria’s 2016 season opener
at CMH Field, the visiting R.A. Long
Lumberjacks from Longview, Wash-
ington, scored a run in the fourth to tie
the game and another in the eighth to
win, 2-1.
Four R.A. Long pitchers combined
for 12 strikeouts and four walks, and
limited Astoria to just four singles in
the nonleague contest.
Pitching on both sides was solid,
as Fishermen starter Carter Wallace
retired the ¿rst 11 batters he faced and
Tyler Lyngstad worked his way out of
a jam in the top of the sixth.
The Lumberjacks had runners at
¿rst and third with no outs, and Lyngs-
tad got two ground-outs and a pop-up
to get out of the inning.
The Fishermen also played well
defensively, but stranded seven base
runners and managed just one run in
the third.
A two-out single by Olaf Englund
scored Trey Hageman from second for
Astoria’s lone run and a 1-0 lead.
R.A. Long’s Drew Walling had a
two-out double in the top of the fourth
and scored on a single, and it was
Walling who drove in the go-ahead run
in the eighth with another double that
brought in Gunnar Blix.
Englund and Hageman each had
two singles for Astoria while Wallace,
Lyngstad and Fridtjof Fremstad allowed
four hits with four strikeouts and no
walks. Astoria plays Friday at Dallas.
