    Clatsop Community College announces 2016 ‘Au Naturel’ exhibit award winners
ASTORIA — The opening re-
ception of Clatsop Communi-
ty College’s 10th annual juried
art exhibit “Au Naturel: The
Nude in the 21st Century” was
held Jan. 28 in the CCC Royal
Nebeker Art Gallery.
This 10th anniversary of
the exhibit is held in memory
of Royal Nebeker, interna-
tionally renowned artist and
beloved instructor who taught
at Clatsop Community Col-
lege for over 30 years and who
served as the ¿rst juror for the
competition. Juror Lisa Har-
ris, the owner of Lisa Harris
Gallery in Seattle, which rep-
resents 30 West Coast contem-
porary artists including Ne-
beker, selected 58 works of art
from nearly 500 submitted im-
ages in addition to two of Ne-
beker’s nudes, which are also
featured in the show. Works
on exhibit represent 52 artists
from 17 states plus the District
of Columbia, in addition to in-
ternational artists from Canada
and Romania.
Eleven of the selected art-
ists were present for the re-
ception. Harris gave a gallery
talk, and cash prizes, purchase
awards, and workshop awards
were announced. Awards for
the “Au Naturel” exhibit are
supported by submission fees
paid by all artists who enter
the competition.
The exhibit will remain on
display at the gallery, 1799
Lexington Ave., through
March 10. The gallery is open
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to
Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Satur-
day, and Sundays and holidays
by appointment. All visitors
are invited to cast a vote for
the People’s Choice Award,
which will be announced at
the close of the exhibition.

“Dioscuric” was also selected
for a purchase award. Har-
ris selected the oil painting
“Sleeping Venus Waking Up”
by Christopher Mooney of
Lake Oswego for the second
place award. Michel Reedy
of Ann Arbor, Michigan, won
third place for his mixed-me-
dia piece “Every Eve.”
All of the artists selected
to participate in the 2016 ex-
hibit were invited to submit
proposals for the solo show
and workshop awards, which
were reviewed by the art fac-
ulty. From among these sub-
missions, Laura Viola Precia-
do of Langley, Washington,
was chosen for the solo show
award. This solo show will
open the Royal Nebeker Art
Gallery’s 2016-17 exhibi-
tion season next fall, and the
featured artist will conduct a
workshop in conjunction with

part of CCC’s growing Permanent Collec-
tion, which is housed primarily in the Dora
Badollet Library.

Ellen Soderquist of Dal-
las, Texas, was selected for a
workshop award, which she
conducted Jan. 29. Partici-
pants included the CCC life
drawing students, several art-
ists represented in this year’s
“Au Nature”l exhibit, as well
as members of the community.
The workshop, called Gesture
Drawing: The Essence of Fig-
ure, was a rigorous three-hour
intensive session concentrat-
ing on gesture drawing tech-
niques designed to sharpen the
artist’s ability to see, internal-
ize and express the ¿gure.
Local artist Penny Treat of
Long Beach, Washington, was
also chosen for a workshop
award, for which the time, date
and details will be announced
in a forthcoming press release.
In addition to Nick Resze-
tar’s large charcoal draw-
ing, Shang Ma’s “Existence
No.32” was also selected
for a Purchase Award. Both
works of art will become part
of CCC’s growing Permanent
Collection, which is currently
housed primarily in the Dora
Badollet Library, located at
1680 Lexington Ave.
