Ammon Bundy: Oregon refuge ‘belongs to the people’
By TERRENCE PETTY
and STEVEN DUBOIS
Associated Press
PORTLAND — The
leader of an armed group that
took over an Oregon wildlife
preserve to protest federal land
policies is remaining de¿ant
behind bars.
While Ammon Bundy on
Tuesday again urged four
holdouts at the refuge to leave,
he said local residents should
control the federally owned
property and 8.6. of¿cials do
not belong there.
Bundy said the FBI
and Oregon State Police
surrounding Malheur National
Wildlife Refuge are leading
an “armed occupation,”
words typically reserved for
the ranchers and others that
launched the standoff on Jan.
2. He said the refuge “belongs
to the people,” according to a
statement read by his attorney.
“I am requesting that the
remaining protesters go home
now so their lives are not
taken,” Bundy’s statement said.
He is among 11 people
arrested in connection with the
standoff, whose adherents have
called federal land restrictions
burdensome and demanded the
government turn over public
lands to local control. Many

Jennifer Williams, who owns a small ranch outside of
Burns, said she arrived at the demonstrations to send a
message that the standoff supporters don’t represent the
voice of the community outside the Harney County Court-
house in Burns, Monday. Hundreds gathered to protest
and support the armed occupation of a national wildlife
preserve.
A makeshift roadside memorial for rancher LaVoy Fini-
cum stands on a highway north of Burns on Sunday. Fin-
icum was killed Tuesday night in a confrontation with the
FBI and Oregon State Police on a remote road. Four peo-
ple occupying the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge held
their position Sunday. They have demanded that they be
allowed to leave without being arrested.
were taken into custody during
a traf¿c stop last week that left
one occupier dead.
All face a felony conspiracy
charge of using intimidation
to prevent federal employees
from their work. Bundy will
stay behind bars while his
attorneys build their case that
the standoff was intended as
a “peaceful protest and civil
disobedience.” A federal judge
has allowed a couple of others
to go free pending trial.
Another court hearing
in the case is scheduled for
Wednesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, the handful of
remaining occupiers offered
no signs they are ready to
leave. They gave an interview
Monday on an online talk
show on a YouTube channel
called Revolution Radio.
“We’re still here,” said
David Fry, adding that the four
hope sympathizers will come
out to back them up. “We need
the American people to get the
courage to stand up.”
Bundy pleaded for them to
go home and aligned with his
father, Nevada rancher Cliven
Bundy, on demanding federal
and state authorities clear out
of the area.
The elder Bundy, who was
involved in a high-pro¿le
2014 standoff with the govern-
ment over grazing rights, sent
a certi¿ed letter to the local
sheriff Monday, saying the
refuge should be placed under
local control.
Unlike his son, Cliven
Bundy has not called for the
last occupiers to leave.
The Oregonian reported
the Rev. Franklin Graham had
spoken with the remaining
occupiers.
Graham spokesman Todd
Shearer told the newspaper
that the religious leader had
communicated by phone with
the four occupiers and federal
of¿cials but Graham had “no
comment” beyond that.
The last four occupiers had
asked Graham to help them
negotiate their departure. They
have said they want assurances
they won’t be arrested.
Federal prosecutors are
building a case against Ammon
Bundy and his followers to
show that the occupation was a
threat to residents and federal
employees. Prosecutors say
the group, once numbering a
couple dozen, was ready to
use violence to hold on to the
refuge.
The standoff also has
created divisions among resi-
dents that will take time to
heal. Many locals want the
occupation to end and are
eager to get on with their lives.
But others sympathize with
Bundy’s complaints, which are
part of a long-running dispute
over federal management of
public lands in the West.
Some have rallied in
support and opposition to
the standoff, the latter often
citing the death of an Arizona
rancher by police. Robert
“LaVoy” Finicum was killed
Jan. 26 during a confrontation
with FBI agents and Oregon
State Police on a remote road.
Federal authorities have
released aerial video and said
Finicum was going for a gun
in his jacket pocket. Bundy’s
relatives say the shooting was
not justi¿ed.

Seaside’s Alice Lane
provides coaching on behalf
of the national pickleball
group. She started playing
pickleball about 12 years ago
while visiting Palm Springs,
California, and has been
playing ever since.
Lane said the sport is easy
to learn, “so much easier than
tennis.”
Lauren and Paul Fisher,
of Seaside, who play tennis
recreationally, agreed after
playing for the ¿rst time.
“I thought it was great,”
Lauren Fisher said. “I think
anybody could come in and
have fun.”
Pickleball provides a faster
learning curve. Unlike tennis,
where a person must play a
lot before it becomes enjoy-
able, “you can have fun very
quickly,” she said.
Pickleball also is designed
to be a social game, Lane
said. With three courts, the
Camp Rilea gymnasium is a
good facility for a community

What’s in a name
Pickleball originated in the
Seattle area in the 1960s. Joel
Pritchard, a congressman at
the time, and his friend Bill
Bell wanted to play badminton
with their two families, but
they could not ¿nd enough
equipment. They improvised,
replacing the badminton
rackets with wooden ping-
pong paddles and using perfo-
rated plastic balls. With the
help of Barney McCallum, the
trio of friends created rules for
their game.
There are two theories
regarding the name’s origin,
and it is possible both are
true. McCallum claimed the
Pritchard family chose to
name their newly invented
game pickleball, because
their cocker spaniel, Pickles,
often ran off with the ball.
Pritchard’s
wife,
Joan,
claimed she started “calling
the game pickleball because
‘the combination of different
sports reminded me of the
pickle boat in crew, where
oarsmen were chosen from
the leftovers of other boats,”
the website states.
The sport caught on in the
community, among neigh-
bors and friends. The USA
Pickleball Association, orga-
nized in 194, is now the of¿-
cial promoter and governing
body for the game, which has
experienced an increase in
popularity over the past few
years.
In pickleball, the ball is
served underhand, without
bouncing it from the court,
and diagonally to the oppo-
nent’s service zone.
Points are scored by the
serving side only and occur
when the opponent fails to
return the ball or hits the ball
out of bounds, also known as
faults. The server continues
to serve, alternating service
courts, until the server faults.
A game is won by the ¿rst
side to reach 11 points but
will continue until won by a
two-point margin.
Pickleball on
the North Coast
The Seaside recreation
district
covers
liability
insurance for the program
and Lane pays rent for the
facility. Last summer, the
district offered a few sessions
of pickleball on Wednesday
mornings for about a month
at Seaside Heights Elemen-
tary School for people of all
ages.
The district is always
looking for ways to “engage
the community more,” espe-
cially during the winter
months when outdoor activ-
ities are more dif¿cult to
provide, Fitness and Special
Events Manager Grace Smith
said. They decided to hold
it on Saturdays this time to
make it more accessible to
those who work during the
week.
The pickleball program
was chosen because it is a
good recreational activity for
LISTINGS
participants of many ages and
something fairly new to the
area, Smith said. Only one
site in Seaside is listed on the
national website as a place to
play, and that is the Thousand
Trails’ Seaside RV Resort.
Lane said she believes
offering pickleball programs
and courts — which have the
same dimensions as doubles
badminton courts — will
make this region even more of
a destination area.
“The Oregon Coast already
is a destination point and this
will be another attraction,”
she said.
In order to increase the
sport’s presence in the area,
“we would need people to
come out and try it for the
¿rst time,” Smith said. After
people try it once, they are
likely to play again, she
added.
Balls and paddles are
provided. The cost is $5 per
person for three hours of play;
only cash is accepted. Camp
Rilea is located at 333168
Patriot Way in Warrenton.
