Gulls, Fish split the Clatsop Splash
The Daily Astorian
6($6,'(²7KH¿UVW&ODW-
sop Splash swim meet of 2016
took place Thursday at Sunset
Pool in Seaside.
With the post-season meets
now just two weeks away, the
Gulls and the Fishermen split
team victories, and both swept
Gladstone, which also took part
in the three-way dual.
On the girls’ side, Astoria
defeated Seaside 75-69; the
Gulls edged Gladstone 73-70;
and the Lady Fish cruised past
the Gladiators, 105-55.
While Astoria racked up
points with their depth, Sea-
side swimmers won nine of
11 events, which included two
victories each for Clarisse Cov-
entry (100- and 200-yard free-
styles); Alyssa Harkins (100-

breaststroke); and Kendy Lin
(200-yard individual medley
and the 100-yard backstroke in
1 minute, 9.48 seconds).
(See Scoreboard for top
three placers in each event).
Seaside also won two of the
three relays, with the foursome
of Coventry, Harkins, Lin and

100 freestyles; and Bradley
Rzewnicki in the 200- and 500
freestyles.
The Gulls’ foursome of Lil-
jenwall, Rzewnicki, Beaudoin
and Alexander Tadei won the
400 freestyle relay and 200
medley relay, in 1:58.58.
Astoria swimmers won
three events — David Keeling
in the 100 backstroke, Aleks
Matthews in the 100 breast-
stroke, and the 200 freestyle
relay, in 1:56.66.
Maya McGill taking the 200-
yard medley (2:12.35) and the
400-yard freestyle (4:18.12).
The Gulls did not have a
team in the 200-yard freestyle
relay, won by Astoria’s Olivia
Paul, Megan Schacher, Kendal
Gustafson and Ashley Schacher.
In the boys’ meet, Seaside
defeated Astoria 76-64, while
the Gulls (90-51) and the Fish-
ermen (87-50) both pounded
Gladstone.
Seaside won eight of the 11
events.

During the production,
Ray-Hunter would love noth-
ing more than to see the nar-
thex lined with photographs
of other martyrs, to remind
attendees that Jesus’ fate is not
an isolated incident, she said.
“I’ll have to wait and see,
once I get into it, whether peo-
ple are comfortable with me go-
ing that far or not, but I would
love to (do that),” she said.

WARRENTON — A
winter car wash is being held
from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sat-
urday at Warrenton Kia, 801
Marlin Ave.
The event is a fundraiser
for the youth group at Hilltop

at the Cannon Beach Community Church in July.

to be far more important than
the actual performance — the
connection that happens be-
tween people and creating
something that is spiritual but
very human, that everyone can
relate to,” she said.
Her ultimate goal is to cre-
ate an ensemble that she can
take to different churches and
venues for different occasions,
“wherever they’re needed.”
Trina Robinson, a Cannon
Beach resident, performed in
both of Ray-Hunter’s Cannon
Beach-based productions. Her
husband, David, is the lead
pastor at the Cannon Beach
Community Church, where the
ensembles took place.
“Interpretive dance is beau-
tiful, creative and harmonious.

the character of God,” said
Robinson, who studied classi-
cal dance in her youth.
Watching and participating
in sacred dance ensembles al-
lows congregates to “experi-
ence worship in a new way. It’s
very gratifying,” she added.
But, even if religious wor-
ship has nothing to do with
why a person gets involved,
Ray-Hunter said there’s some-
thing inspiring about the uni-
versality of dance.
“It’s been done since before
history. People have always

at winter solstice or summer
solstice,” she said. “It’s an
eternal thing.”

will help the group, which is led
by Chris Wilson, travel to Tecate,
Mexico, in March to hold a va-
cation Bible school and work on
various construction projects.
Warrenton Kia will match
the amount of donations at the
end of the car wash.

‘An eternal thing’
After working as a pro-
fessional ballet dancer for
25 years, Ray-Hunter started
teaching and arranging sacred
dance ensembles when she
retired from the professional
scene in 1990. She launched
her Palm Sunday productions
in Connecticut and has taken it
up and down the I-5 corridor,
including in Ashland, Grants
Pass, Eugene, Hillsboro and,
most recently, Cannon Beach,
where she lives.
Now she wants to start up
an ensemble in Astoria. “I
think, it being a small com-
munity, but having so many
old traditions here, it would
be very nice to see them come
together.”
Every year, her Palm Sun-
day production changes, de-
pending on the setting and the
number of performers.
