She also decided, after 28
years in the food-and-beverage
industry, that she was ready to
own a business.
“I don’t want it to be in vain
that I resigned from the Mari-
ners, because I loved that job,”
said Cheryl Koon, who told
herself: “I’m going to make
it happen — make my own
dreams come true.”
After learning that Seren-
dipity Deli Caffe was for sale,
“it was pretty clear that this is
where I belonged,” she said.
“It just made sense.”
The Koons befriended the
previous owner, who soon
closed down the deli-cafe.
They reopened it as a bak-
ery-cafe the next day, New
Year’s Day of 2015.
Serendipity — housed in
a historic building that was
once a Mobile gas station
and, later, a U.S. Bank (a
bullet mark remains in a bul-
letproof window from a 1984
robbery) — shuns the assem-
bly-line sameness of many
eateries. The breakfasts and
burger patties, the espressos
and desserts are all house-
Cheryl Koon — who still
works for the Tacoma Dome
doing behind-the-scenes ca-
tering — got her start in the
food-and-beverage industry as
a teenager when she was hired
as a hostess in her hometown
of Issaquah, Washington.
“I kind of fell in love with
the industry. I fell in love with
meeting new people every day
and getting to know people
who would come in often,”
she said.
The couple’s recent move
marks the second time they
have taken up residence the
Astoria-Warrenton
area.
James, in fact, began his Coast
Guard career on the Alert in
2001, back when their now
22-year-old son, Jacob, was 8,
and Cheryl was pregnant with
their daughter, Kaylynn.
“I kind of want to make sure
that we take care of the town,
you know?” Cheryl Koon said.
“This restaurant has been es-
tablished since 2003; it’s kind
of a staple in Warrenton.”
Since Serendipity is in
Warrenton’s downtown core
rather than on U.S. Highway
101, the business relies almost
solely on regulars and local
customers most of the year.
Every day, veterans get a 10
percent discount.
So far, Cheryl Koon is lov-
ing her ¿ rst plunge into busi-
ness ownership.
“Like people say: If you’re
doing what you love, then
you never work another day
in your life. And some days I
feel like that, and some days I
go, ‘What have I done!?’ she
said, laughing. “Every day is
different; Some days are great,
some days are not. But it’s all
an adventure.”

That’s the very same atti-
tude she takes at Serendipity.
“We just want people to feel
comfortable, like you’re in our
home, ” she said.
Koon and her husband,
James , purchased the estab-
lishment in December 2014
several months after moving
to Astoria, where they live in
Uppertown.
Alongside
catering
star-studded shows and family
events in Seattle, Cheryl Koon
managed the Hit it Here Cafe
& Bar, a casual dining restau-
rant in Safeco’s right ¿ eld that
caters for the Seattle Mariners,
their families and fans, and
visiting teams.
But when James Koon, a
boatswain’s mate chief in the
U.S. Coast Guard, transferred
to Astoria — where he serves
as an active duty member on
board the cutter Alert — she
decided that she couldn’t main-
tain her seasonal game-to-game
schedule with the Mariners.

Whereas many people
would be too starstruck to
speak, Koon simply focuses on
giving these superstars great
service.
“They’re
everywhere.
They’re at two different cities
in one day. I just want to make
sure that they feel welcomed,
and that they can settle and
stay centered when they’re at
my establishment, or in my
building, or in my presence,”
she said. “I want to make sure
that they’re taken care of.”
