Astoria, Seaside boys open Classic with wins

SEASIDE — Even with a 9 p.m. start, the Sea-
side boys basketball team was playing lively bas-
ketball Thursday night, in an opening-round game
of the Seaside Holiday Classic.
Action continues today and concludes Saturday
at Seaside High School.
The Gulls opened the game vs. Madras with a
3-pointer by Jackson Januik, and started the second
half with a trey by Hunter Thompson, as Seaside
was never threatened in the 73-62 win.
Jaxson Smith poured in a game-high 28 points
for the Gulls, who will face Sisters in tonight’s semi-
¿nals 9 p.m.. Astoria plays 1ewport in the other
semi¿nal, as the two teams are on a Clatsop Clash
collision course for the tournament championship.
Seaside’s ¿rst half lead reached 33-6, before
Madras staged a brief rally to pull within 39-3 at
halftime.
Thompson and Smith both drained 3-pointers to
push the lead back to 6-3 at the end of the third
quarter.
Januik and Thompson each ¿nished with 2
points.

Astoria 59, Elma 38
Astoria was in command from start to ¿nish
Thursday morning, in the ¿rst boys’ game of the
tournament.
Derek Jarrett had a steal and dunk for the ¿rst
two points of the game, and the Fishermen cruised
to a 59-38 win over Elma.
“We didn’t have to run a lot of offense,” said
coach Kevin Goin. “For not playing in a week-and-
a-half, we played great defense, forced turnovers
and got a lot of steals for some easy hoops.”
Morgan Fruiht scored 20 points for Astoria, and
teammate Kyle Strange added 2.
Girls
Seaside 47, Madras 29
It was technically a “come from behind” victory
for the Seaside girls Thursday night, in a ¿rst round
game of the Holiday Classic.
Trailing Madras -2 early, the /ady Gulls went
on a 7-2 run to close the ¿rst half, on their way to
a 7-29 win.
Consecutive scores by Maddi Utti and Paige
Ideue in the third helped Seaside open a 28-0 lead,
with a Mumper by /ucy %odner making it 32-6.
Utti hit a 3-pointer and Sydney Villegas had a
three-point early in the fourth, as Seaside pulled
away.
Utti led with 23 points.
The Gulls play /ost 5iver in tonight’s semi¿-
nals.

Warriors dropped their second league contest in a
row, as Catlin Gabel left Warrenton with a 50-29
win Thursday night.
Boys Basketball
Knappa 82, Gaston 44
K1APPA — The Knappa /oggers bounced
back from their loss at /ife Christian with an 82-
win over Gaston Thursday.
Knappa jumped all over the visitors to start the
game.
Sophomore Colton Weirup scored the ¿rst 2
points, as Knappa built a 6-0 lead.
%ut Knappa’s go-to guy was sophomore Dale
Takalo, who scored a game-high 35 points, 26 in
the second half.
Weirup added 2, and freshman Timber Engb-
lom scored 0 for Knappa.
Elma 57, Astoria 46
Conley Doyle scored 5 points, and three other
Elma players added eight points apiece to help the
Eagles score a 57-6 win over Astoria in the ¿rst
game of the Holiday Classic.
Chloee Hunt was in foul trouble for most of the
game, but led the /ady Fishermen with 22 points,
followed by Kaylee Mitchell with seven.

Knappa 45, Gaston 30
K1APPA — A big third quarter lifted the Knap-
pa /ady /oggers to their ¿rst victory of the 205-
6 season, a 2-30 win over Gaston Thursday at
Knappa.
Holding a slim 9-5 lead at halftime, the /og-
gers changed up their defense to start the second
half, and began to score basket-after-basket, follow-
ing steal-after-steal to build a 38-2 lead.
Kaitlyn /andwehr had 0 points in the third
period alone, on her way to 20 points, with 2 re-
bounds, six steals and ¿ve assists.
