Astoria swimmers win Andrew’s Meet

It was slightly drier and a lot
warmer inside than it was outside
Saturday at the Astoria Aquatic
Center, as the Astoria Fish swim
team hosted their annual Andrew
Nygaard Invitational meet.
“I’m just glad we’re inside
and not traveling today,” Asto-
ria coach Amy Emmett said, at
the conclusion of the meet that
honors the memory of Andrew
Nygaard, the young Astoria
swimmer who died in 1998 at
age 15.
It was doubly nice for Emmett,
whose team swept “Andrew’s
0eet” for the ¿rst time in years.
7he Fishermen ¿nished ¿rst
in the team standings for both the
boys and girls. Tillamook could
not attend the meet because of
poor road conditions, so the meet
turned out to be a three-way be-
tween Astoria, Seaside and Rain-
ier.
In addition, the competing
schools were missing some ath-
letes due to SAT testing.
Among others, Astoria was
missing Victoria Kee, Olivia Paul
and Jacob Hulti. Seaside was also
missing swimmers.
Still, the victory was sweet,
Emmett said.
“I think it’s going to be an in-
teresting year in the district,” she
said. “Seaside has a very strong
girls team, and Newport has a
very strong boys team. I’m just
blown away that we beat Seaside
today. They have an awesome
girls’ relay, but they’re limited on
numbers.”
Seaside had fewer athletes
Saturday, but more victories (14).

ELMIRA — The Astoria
girls basketball team opened the
season with a long road trip to
the southern Willamette Valley
over the weekend, and returned
home with a 1-1 record.
In Friday’s season opener
for Astoria, Elmira’s Miranda
Jensen scored 27 points in a 56-
48 Falcons’ win.
Elmira held a 21-13 lead af-
ter one quarter, before the Lady
Fishermen rallied to within 28-
24 at halftime.
The Falcons went on a 12-5
in the third period.
Chloee Hunt led Astoria
with 22 points and six rebounds,
while the Fishermen had 11
steals defensively.
Astoria rebounded with a
66-45 win at Cottage Grove
Saturday. Four players scored
in double ¿gures, as the Lady
Fish scored the most points in a
game since Dec. 20, 2007 (a 69-
20 win over Taft).
Kaylee Mitchell led with 17
points, 10 rebounds and three
steals. Alexis Wallace added
16 points, 11 rebounds and
four steals. Rylee DeMander
¿nished with 15 points and ¿ve
steals, and Hunt had 12 points
and six rebounds.
Cascade 51, Seaside 41
TURNER — Cascade
snapped a 32-32 tie in the third
quarter by closing the game on
a 19-9 run to defeat Seaside, 51-
41, in nonleague girls basketball
action Friday.
The loss was the ¿rst of the
season for the Lady Gulls, who
host the annual Holiday Classic
later this week. Seaside opens
play against Madras Thursday.
Loggers 0-2 at Heppner
HEPPNER — The Knap-
pa girls basketball team faced
a couple of tough opponents in
the Heppner Kick-Off Classic,
held Friday and Saturday.
In Friday’s tournament
opener, Heppner defeated
Knappa 40-20.
Knappa’s Paris Vanderburg
had nine points, but the Loggers
trailed 13-2 after one quarter
and 37-8 after three.
Knappa lost a 62-37 conso-
lation to Ione Saturday.
Vanderburg led the Loggers
with 10 points, followed by
Kaitlyn Landwehr with eight.
Ione was 16-of-27 from the free
throw line, to Knappa’s 5-for-
18.
Ilwaco 75, Chief Leschi 31
ILWACO, Wash. — Trail-
ing 17-10 after one quarter Fri-
day night, the Ilwaco girls bas-
ketball team kicked it into high
gear in the second period and
cruised to an easy 75-31 win
over Chief Leschi.
The Lady Fishermen out-
scored the Warriors 25-2 in the
second quarter.
Ilwaco had four players in
double ¿gures, led by Maken]ie
Kaech with 19.
Willapa 54, Naselle 38
NASELLE, Wash. — Wil-
lapa Valley built a 37-19 half-
time lead Friday, on its way to a
54-38 win at Naselle.
Tayler Ford led the Comets
with 14 points.
Boys Basketball
Seaside 73, Cascade 67
TURNER — The Seaside
boys showed that they are ready
to take on all challengers this
season, following a road win
over last year’s fourth-place
team in the state.
Jaxson Smith and Hunter
Thompson scored 21 points
apiece Friday night, in a 73-67
win at Cascade.
Jackson Januik scored 13
points and Attikin Babb added
11 for the Gulls, who jumped out
to a 20-5 lead after one quarter.
Seaside hit nine 3-point-
ers, four by Thompson. Januik
dished out 13 assists and Zach
Marston had ¿ve rebounds.
“We have a lot to work on,
but it was still a good road win,”
Seaside coach Bill Westerholm
said. “We got out early, then
they hit four 3’s in the second
quarter to cut into our lead. We
weren’t making our free throws
(11-for-22) until the end, when
we made a few to put it away.”
The Gulls host their annual
Holiday Classic later this week.
Knappa 75, Ione 30
HEPPNER — Knappa
bounced back after an opening
round loss in the Heppner Kick-
Off Classic with a 75-30 win
over Ione Saturday, as the Log-
gers split a pair of games in the
tournament.
Knappa jumped out to a 21-4
lead, and led 42-14 by halftime.
Dale Takalo (20 points) and
Colton Weirup (19) combined
for 39 points, with Jason Miller
adding 10.
The Loggers also had a big
advantage at the free throw line,
hitting 16-of-28 to Ione’s 2-for-8.
Heppner topped the Loggers
52-38 in Friday’s game.
The Mustangs broke an 11-
11 tie by outscoring Knappa
25-13 over the second and third
quarters.
Takalo had 13 points and
Weirup added 10 for the Loggers.
Heppner was 13-of-28 at the free
throw line, to Knappa’s 4-for-6.
Chief Leschi 66, Ilwaco 62
ILWACO, Wash. — A
fourth-quarter rally by Chief
Leschi forced overtime, and the
Warriors outscored Ilwaco 14-
10 in the extra frame for a 66-62
win over the Fishermen Friday
night at Ilwaco.
Ilwaco’s Zac Tapio led all
scorers with 18 points, while
teammates Marcos Mendo]a
and Reese Tynkila added 13 and
11 points, respectively.
Naselle 64, Willapa 59
NASELLE, Wash. — Tra-
vis Pine had 17 points and
Donny Edwards added 15 for
Naselle, in a 64-59 win over
Willapa Valley Friday.
“We’ll see what happens when
we have them all here.”
Astoria’s only other girls’ vic-
tory came from Gustafson, who
took ¿rst in the 100-yard breast-
stroke (1:21.78).
Ashley Schacher was sec-
ond in the 50-yard freestyle and
100-yard butterÀy, and Sparks
was second in the 100-yard free-
style and 100-yard backstroke.
Shoshanna McCleary took sec-
ond in the 500-yard freestyle.
“Ashley Schacher is not quite
back to where she was at the end
of last year, but she’s close,” Em-
mett said. “Olivia and Kendal
are going to be real competitive
in the breaststroke, and Megan
Sparks is approaching the school
record in the backstroke.”
The Lady Gulls, meanwhile,
may struggle in smaller meets,
but could score huge points at
districts and state.
Highlights for Seaside in-
cluded wins for Alyssa Harkins
(200-yard individual medley and
butterÀy) Holly Wood (200-yard
freestyle and 500 freestyle) Cla-
risse Coventry (50 and 100 free-
styles) and Kendy Lin (back-
stroke).
Lin, Harkins, Coventry and
Wood combined to win the 200
and 400 relays.
On the boys’ side, Astoria
freshman Joshua Shipley took
¿rst in the 200individual med-
ley (2:1.52) and the butterÀy
(1:02.21).
Sophomore Aleks Matthews
had the only other victory for the
Fishermen (1:25.72 in the breast-
stroke).
Seaside’s Luke Liljenwall
won the 100 and 200 freestyles.
“Aleks
Matthews
has
dropped a huge amount of time
in the 100 breaststroke,” Em-
mett said. “And Josh (Shipley) is
swimming very well. He has the
potential to break a couple school
records.”

Ilwaco wrestlers top ‘The Rock’ at Warrenton mat meet

WARRENTON — The Il-
waco, Wash., wrestling team had
athletes place at all 14 weights
Saturday, as the Fishermen won
the 11-team Warrenton Tourna-
ment, which featured the usual
powerhouse from Castle Rock,
Wash.
Ilwaco had three individu-
al champions, including Jack
Odneal at 138 pounds, Riki
Thompson (145) and Daylin
Kemmer (170).
Adding big points with sec-
ond-place ¿nishes were Trenton
Cox (113), Jack Kaino (160) and
Alec Bell (220).
Ilwaco’s Ghannon Wheldon
(106) and Deantay Kellogg (195)
provided third-place showings.
The Fishermen racked up
249 points to win the team cham-
pionship, topping Castle Rock
(217.5) and Astoria (145). Knap-
pa (125.5) and Warrenton (84.5)
placed ¿fth and sixth, respective-
ly.
Knappa’s Andrew Goo]ee
won the title at 182, and team-
mate Reuben Cru] placed sec-
ond at 152. Luke Goo]ee (113),
Dawson Whiteside (145) and
Noah Gothro (170) all added
third-place points.
“The team did well consid-
ering we didn’t ¿ll ¿ve weights,
and most schools were larger
than Knappa,” Logger coach
Dan Owings said.
