Utti pops for 36 in Gulls’ victory
By GARY HENLEY

SCOREBOARD
SEASIDE — The Seaside Lady
Gulls just con¿rmed what we already
knew Friday night — it’s going to be
another winning season in Seaside.
For the second year in a row, the
Gulls opened their season with a win
over Liberty, a Class 5A school from
Hillsboro.
Junior Maddi Utti showed that she’s
already in Player of the Year form, as
the Cowapa’s best player for the last
two years poured in 36 points, and the
Gulls cruised in a 60-53 win over the
Falcons.
Seaside jumped out to a 13-3 lead,
but Liberty — which was 1-for-14
from the ¿eld in the ¿rst quarter —
staged a second half rally and made the
game close.
The Falcons had a chance to tie late,
but Utti took control and scored three
consecutive ¿eld goals to help the Gulls
pull away. Utti and teammate Sydney
Villegas were a combined 6-for-6 from
the free throw line in the ¿nal two min-
utes.
Seaside shot a blistering 69 percent
from the ¿eld 22-for-32.
Utti had 18 points in each half,
while Seaside had just one other player
in double ¿gures Villegas with 11.

“Maddi had a great game and played
like her hair was on ¿re,” Seaside coach
Wally Hamer said. “Brittany West did a
good job, as did Sydney Villegas on the
glass.”
Numerous fouls had the Liberty
starters in foul trouble right from the
start, and three key players eventually
fouled out.
Liberty was whistled for 30 fouls on
the night, and the Gulls took advantage
by making 22-of-42 free throws. Utti
alone was 12-for-18 at the line, in a
game that featured a combined 55 fouls,
70 turnovers and 35 missed free throws.
“We survived, even though we com-
mitted too many turnovers and missed
our free throws,” Hamer said. “That
was a great ¿rst game for our kids.
“Liberty played great defense and
pressured us all night,” he said. “They
are a much-improved team from last
year. They made several runs at us so
we had to play with some toughness.”
Warriors second in
Vernonia Tourney
VERNONIA — The Warrenton
Lady Warriors opened the Vernonia
Tournament with a 34-29 win over
Waldport Friday, but ran into a tough
Riverdale team in Saturday’s champi-
onship game.
The Mavericks defeated Warrenton
50-21 in the title contest of the four-
team tournament.
Tigers 47, Loggers 24
KNAPPA — Clatskanie outscored
Knappa in every quarter Friday night,
on its way to a 47-24 win over the Lady
Loggers in a nonleague girls basketball
season opener.
Rachel Haas scored 12 points to
lead the Tigers, and Olivia Warren
added 11.
Kaitlyn Landwehr and Paris Van-
derburg scored eight points apiece for
the Loggers, who trailed 19-13 at half-
time.
Landwehr pulled down 11 rebounds
with two steals, and Vanderburg had
three steals and three blocks for Knap-
pa, which was playing without Kaitlyn
Truax.
Ilwaco 63, N. Beach 39
OCEAN SHORES, Wash. — Ilwa-
co sophomores Mackenzie Kaech and
Eliza Bannister combined for 43 points
Friday night, more than the Lady Fish-
ermen needed in an easy 63-39 win at
North Beach.
Seaside’s Maddi Utti, No. 25, puts up a shot over Liberty’s Jaidyn Thomas, No. 4, during the second quarter
against Liberty High School at Seaside on Friday.

Falcons leave Gulls’ nest with 57-51 win
By GARY HENLEY
The Daily Astorian
SEASIDE — There’s no
question that Seaside will be
a major player in 4A boys
basketball by the end of the
season — the Gulls just had
a tough time against the 5A
level Friday night, as Liberty
came to Seaside and left with
a 57-51 win.
The Gulls rallied from
a 4- de¿cit in the third
quarter to take a 48-46 lead
with 3:51 left in the fourth,
only to see the Falcons go on
an 11-3 run to close out the
intense nonleague game.
Liberty’s Jacob Mast hit
four straight free throws in
the closing minutes, and
scored on a layup at the 2:15
mark that put the Falcons
ahead to stay, 52-51.
Moments earlier, Sea-
side’s Austin Eagon scored
off his own steal, drew the
foul and made the free throw
to give the Gulls a 51-50 ad-
vantage.
Seaside had two crucial
turnovers down the stretch,
however, and the Falcons
converted the miscues into
points for the win.
Hunter Thompson scored
15 points to lead Seaside,
with eight points apiece from
Jackson Januik and Jaxson
Smith.
Tigers 55, Loggers 53
KNAPPA — Clatskanie
pulled off a rare victory Fri-
day night — winning a boys
basketball game at Knappa.
The Loggers — who were
10-1 at home last season —
came up short in a nonleague
game against the Tigers, as
Clatskanie built a halftime
lead, then rallied in the fourth
quarter for a 55-53 win.
Knappa took a two-point
lead into the ¿nal period,
and led 53-51 following
two Braedon Eltagonde free
throws with 50 seconds re-
maining.
The Tigers tied the game
on the next possession, the
Loggers missed at the other
end, and Clatskanie’s Andrew
Norgren scored on a short
jump-hook with four seconds
left for the winning points.
Knappa missed on a
3-pointer as time ran out.
“It was a good game,” said
Knappa coach Chris Spencer.
“We had some foul trouble
and played a little short-hand-
ed, but we traded baskets the
whole fourth quarter, and had
some good looks at the end.”
Dale Takalo scored a
game-high 21 points for the
Loggers, before fouling out
with four minutes left. Knap-
pa also lost Ethan Rubus to
fouls, and was playing with-
out Dakota Severson.
Knappa was 9-for-18 from
the free throw line, to Clats-
kanie’s 16-for-24.
Jason Miller added 13
points and Colton Weirup
scored nine for the Loggers,
who play at Warrenton Tues-
day.
Warriors drop two
VERNONIA — The War-
renton boys basketball team
took part in the four-team
Vernonia Tournament over
the weekend, and came up
short in a pair of games.
Waldport defeated the
Warriors 44-27 Friday, and
Riverdale topped Warrenton
in a Saturday consolation
game, 48-33.
Ilwaco 61, Naselle 32
ILWACO, Wash. — A trio
of Ilwaco players scored in
double ¿gures Saturday night,
helping the Fishermen to a 61-
32 win over Naselle in a non-
league boys basketball game.

Zac Tapio led all scorers
with 17 points, and Ilwaco
teammates Reese Tynkila and
Marcos Mendoza added 13
and 10 points, respectively.
Ilwaco outscored Naselle
25-7 in a second quarter run.
Tapio added 11 rebounds,
¿ve blocks, four steals and
four assists, as Ilwaco im-
proves to 3-0 overall.
Ilwaco 69, N. Beach 55
OCEAN SHORES, Wash.
— Freshman Alex Kaino
scored 27 points and the Ilwa-
co boys won 69-55 at North
Beach Friday.
Juniors Ethan Bannister add-
ed 15 and Zac Tapio chipped in
14 for the Fishermen, who out-
scored the Hyaks 17-8 in a key
second quarter run.
