Lessons learned about the Valley Catholic girls
soccer team Tuesday night: The Valiants can ex-
ecute the corner kicks, and they can score lots of
goals in a short amount of time.
The No. 8-ranked Valiants were doing both at
CMH Field, in a Cowapa League game with As-
toria.
Valley Catholic had two corner kick opportu-
nities in the ¿rst half, and scored on both for a -
halftime edge; and the Valiants scored four goals
in a span of three minutes, 13 seconds midway
through the second half.
“Valley Catholic is a well-coached and move-
ment-oriented team,” Astoria coach Sarah von
Coldit] said. “Their mid¿elders work very well with
their forwards and move the ball away from pressure.
“We didn’t quite stick to our game of playing
balls to feet and moving off the ball.”
The Lady Fishermen did not have a single shot
on goal, as Valley Catholic controlled the ball of-
fensively and played solid defense all night.
The Valiants’ ¿rst corner kick came in the
eighth minute, and Meredith Woolverton deliv-
ered a perfect kick from the left corner to team-
mate Reilly Blood in front of the goal. Blood head-
ed the ball into the net for the ¿rst score.
With :1 remaining in the ¿rst half, -essi
Beyer’s corner kick from the right side deÀected
off the hands of Astoria goalkeeper Lexi Law just
under the cross bar for a - lead.
From there, Law made several big saves and
broke up a Valiant breakaway to keep the Fisher-
men within reach at halftime.
Astoria was able to deny the Valiants on their
¿rst three corner kicks of the second half, but not
the fourth.
From the left side, a kick by Woolverton went
straight to Annika Filip, who volleyed the ball into
the upper left corner of the net for a 3- advantage,
with 1: left.
At the : mark, Blood outraced two de-
fenders and scored to make it -; Taylor Menkens
followed with a nice pass up the middle to Blood,
who scored her third goal with 1:3 remaining;
and Menken’s shot from the right post deÀected
off an Astoria player and into the net for the ¿nal
goal at the 18:13 mark.
The Fishermen were without Megan Bergeron
(ankle injury), who could return against Banks
Thursday.

Seaside 3, Tillamook 0
TILLAMOOK — The Seaside Gulls are clos-
ing in on a top three ¿nish in the Cowapa League,
as they scored another shutout win Tuesday night,
3- at Tillamook.
Seaside improves to 4-4, tied with Banks for
third place with two regular season games remain-
ing. Tillamook drops to -1 overall. The Cheese-
makers have been outscored 89-1 this season.
No details were reported.
Boys Soccer
Seaside 2, Tillamook 1
SEASIDE — The Seaside boys locked up a
share of the Cowapa League title Tuesday night at
Tillamook, as the Gulls defeated the Cheesemak-
ers -1.
Elsewhere in Cowapa boys soccer, Valley
Catholic defeated Astoria, -.
No details were reported from either game.
Volleyball
The volleyball playoffs are set for two local
teams.
Warrenton, ranked 1st in the latest OSAA rank-
ings, will host 18th-ranked Portland Christian Thurs-
day at p.m. in a Lewis Clark League playoff.
The Royals and Warriors both ¿nished - in
league play.
Elsewhere, Knappa plays at Gaston Thursday
(:3 p.m.) in a Northwest League playoff.
The winner of that match advances to play the
winner of Vernonia vs. Nestucca Saturday, and the
winner of Saturday’s match secures the league’s
No. 3 seed to the state playoffs.
