Fishermen win a Clatsop Smash, 36-3

SEASIDE — It was a per-
fect night to “Take Back the
Clash” for the Astoria Fight-
ing Fishermen.
After enduring tough
losses to Seaside the last
two years, Astoria football
once again rules the Clat-
sop Clash, as the Fishermen
dominated in a 36-3 win
over the Gulls Friday night.
The big rivalry game at
Broadway Field was never
really in doubt, with Astoria
scoring on its first offensive
play from scrimmage, a 12-
yard run by Carter Wallace.
Wallace added two more
touchdown runs as the Fish-
ermen rolled up 222 yards
on the ground, and the Asto-
ria defense allowed just 108
yards in total offense.
Whitney Westerholm’s
21-yard field goal with 2:05
left in the game helped Sea-
side avoid the shutout, while
the Gulls continued to lose
starters.
Already without its first-
and second-string quarter-
backs (Otto Hoekstre and
Jaxson Smith), Seaside start-
ed Alex Barker behind cen-
ter, and ran out of the ‘Wild-
cat’ formation all night.
Barker left with a shoul-
der injury late in the first
half, and senior Nathanael
Ward finished the game at
quarterback.
Meanwhile, the Fisher-
men can start prepping for
the playoffs.
Three league wins puts
Astoria (3-1 in league) into
at least the Regional Play-
In round. The 11th-ranked
Fishermen play at Banks
(3-1) Friday. Seaside (1-3)
completes the regular season
at Scappoose (4-0).
Astoria’s Andrew Schau-
ermann kicked a 29-yard
field goal to give the Fish-
ermen a 9-0 lead after one
quarter; while Wallace had
a TD run and Ryan Palek
caught a 14-yard scoring
toss from Fridtjof Fremstad
for a 23-0 halftime advan-
tage.
Wallace and Clay En-
glund had TD runs in the
third quarter as the lead
reached 36-0.
Wallace finished with
106 yards rushing on 14 at-
tempts, and did not play in
the fourth quarter.
Ryker Helmersen and Jar-
ed Lucore had interceptions
for Astoria, while Seaside
was unable to take advan-
tage of good field position,
provided by two big kickoff
returns from sophomore An-
thony Orozco.

Tigers edge Warrenton in 28-14 win

WARRENTON — Clats-
kanie was able to stay one
step ahead of the Warrenton
Warriors Friday night in a key
Lewis & Clark League foot-
ball game.
The Warriors tried to ral-

touchdowns, but the Tigers
answered each time with a
score of their own for a 28-14
win over Warrenton.
Gavon McFadden caught a
49-yard, third quarter touch-
down toss from Giovanni
Martinez to help the Warriors
trim the Clatskanie lead to
14-6, but the Tigers respond-
ed with a 39-yard Cooper
Starkel-to-Dawson Howard
touchdown.
Clatskanie’s Wyatt McK-
ay had a fourth quarter TD,
shortly after another Marti-
nez-to-McFadden touchdown.
Martinez passed for 180
yards, but the Warriors were
held to just 10 yards rushing
on 25 attempts. McFadden
caught four passes for 64
yards.
Nestucca 46, Knappa 0
CLOVERDALE — The
Knappa Loggers threw three
interceptions and lost three
fumbles and an onside kick.
Seven lost possessions
will cost any team, as it did
the Loggers Friday night at
Nestucca.
The Bobcats took advan-
tage of the Knappa miscues to
score a 46-0 win.
Nestucca’s Wyatt McKil-
lip ran for 115 yards and three
touchdowns, and teammate
Oli Samek added 74 yards and
two scores.
Knappa’s Andrew Goozee
had 56 yards rushing, and
Braedon Eltagonde caught
