Both teams came away
satisfied with the results late
Tuesday night, in a Cowapa
League girls soccer match at
CMH Field.
The Tillamook Cheese-
makers scored their first
goal of the season; and the
Astoria Lady Fishermen
picked up their first victory
of 2015, a 3-1 decision over
the Lady Mooks.
Both teams came into the
contest with 0-8 records, and
having been outscored by a
combined 109-3.
Astoria scored two goals
in the opening 3 1/2 minutes,
then coasted from there to
score the win.
Three different players
tallied goals for the Lady
Fishermen, who snapped a
nine-game losing streak go-
ing back to last season.
“Our defensive line
worked well tonight,” said
Astoria coach Sarah von
Colditz. “All around it was
a game I can smile about.
A huge congrats to the girls
on their first win of the 2015
season.”
Meanwhile, Tillamook
has played 34 straight games
without a victory.
The Cheesemakers are
currently ranked 40th out of
40 teams at the Class 4A lev-
el, and have not won a game
since Sept. 14, 2013. Tilla-
mook has been outscored
67-1 this season.
In the third minute, Asto-
ria’s Victoria Kee went one-
on-one with Tillamook keep-
er Taylor Browning, and
scored from the right side on
a tough angle near the end
line for the game’s first goal.
One minute later, the
Cheesemakers failed to clear
a ball near the top of the box,
and Astoria’s Ashlee Dalton
put a foot on it and tapped
it into the net for a 2-0 lead.
Jenna Rudolph got the assist.
That’s all the Lady Fish-
ermen would get in the first
half, despite 17 shots on
goal.

Mabry and Lexis Law had
very little work to do, as the
Cheesemakers had just one
shot on frame in the ¿rst half.
Astoria’s domination con-
tinued in the second half, with
the Fishermen taking target
practice on the Tillamook net.
Still, shots by Hailey
Ranta, Rudolph and Megan
Bergeron either sailed wide
of the mark or were saved by
Browning, who had an out-
standing game in goal.
The Cheesemakers scored
a fluke goal with 24:01 re-
maining, as Law was able
to stop a Tillamook shot, but
Warriors defeat Riverdale in three-game sweep
The Daily Astorian
PORTLAND — With the
league playoffs right around
the corner, the Warrenton War-
riors are looking to improve
their standing in Lewis &
Clark League volleyball.
And the Warriors moved
one match closer to ¿fth place
Tuesday night, with a three-
game sweep over Riverdale,
25-20, 25-15, 25-18.
Warrenton improves to 3-5
in league play, just one game
behind Portland Christian (4-
4) in the standings. Riverdale
drops to 1-11 overall.
Faith Bible def. Knappa
KNAPPA — Faith Bible re-
mains just a half-game behind
Vernonia in the Northwest
League volleyball standings,
following a 25-17, 25-21, 25-
17 win at Knappa Tuesday.
The Loggers had rallied
from a 20-15 de¿cit to tie
Game 2 at 20-20, before the
Falcons recovered to win.
“Overall I was pretty ex-
cited about how we played to-
night,” said Knappa coach Jeff
Kaul. “Faith Bible has one of
the best players in the league,
and when she decides to score
it’s pretty tough to stop her.”
Kaitlyn Landwehr led
Knappa with seven kills, with
four assists and three digs.
Jaden Miethe had 10 digs,
while Kaitlyn Truax and Paris
Vanderburg each had four ace
serves.
she lost her grip on the ball,
and senior Damara Morales
was able to knock the ball in
the net for Tillamook’s first
goal of the season.
The Fishermen were able
to tack on an insurance goal
with 13:24 left, as Mabry
gathered in a deflected shot
by Bergeron and scored from
close range.
Astoria had another 14
shots on goal in the second
half, in addition to five cor-
ner kick opportunities.
Despite being outscored
this year 45-3 entering the
game, “The girls came out
ready to score goals to-
night,” von Colditz said. “I
think their enthusiasm got
ahead of them, so it took us a
while to calm down and play
the game.
“Our offensive players
were doing exactly what
they needed to,” she said.
“I’ve never seen so many
shots tallied up for us on our
stats sheet. I was impressed.
You cannot score if you
don’t shoot.”

Banks 3, Seaside 2
BANKS — Banks broke a
2-2 tie with four minutes left
in the game for a 3-2 win over
Seaside Tuesday, in Cowapa
League girls soccer action.
Seaside scored the game’s
first goal in the 24th minute,
as Chloe Bartel found the
back of the net for the only
score of the first half.
The Braves tied the game
just five minutes into the sec-
ond half, then pulled ahead
in the 70th minute when a
loose ball was touched past
the Seaside goalkeeper.
“We gave them that sec-
ond goal,” said Seaside
coach Matt Johnson. “It was
a scramble, and in the confu-
sion they got a toe on it. That
happens.”
The Gulls got the equaliz-
er just two minutes later, as
Audrey Kunde fought for a
50/50 ball and zipped it past
the Banks keeper.
Banks responded with
just four minutes left in the
game, scoring the eventual
game-winner.
Seaside threatened to tie
it late, as Sophia Trevino and
Whitney Westerholm both
had shots on frame but time
ran out on the Gulls. “We
battled well tonight,” John-
son said. “The field was a
factor and any time we play
at Banks we know we are in
for a scrum.”
Seaside hosts Valley
Catholic Tuesday.
