Astoria’s hard-luck season continues
The Daily Astorian
It had the makings of a
great comeback story … but
the Tillamook Cheesemak-
ers didn’t follow the script
Monday night at the Brick
House.
The No. 8-ranked Lady
Mooks built a two-game
lead on Astoria in a Cowa-
pa League volleyball show-
down, then held on in Game
4 to win the match, 25-21,
25-8, 23-25, 25-21.
Tillamook improves to
4-3 in league play, while
the Lady Fishermen are still
seeking their first league
victory, with three matches
remaining.
Astoria made a valiant
effort, all things considered.
The Lady Fishermen
were without two key start-
ers (Jacqueline Jarrett and
Madi Landwehr), both out
with concussions.
Still, Astoria jumped out
to an 11-3 lead in Game 1,
thanks to some sharp serving
from Aurora Grafton, three
kills by Chloee Hunt, and a
nicely placed shot from Ha-
lie Korff.
But Tillamook rallied
and caught Astoria at 15-15,
then broke a tie at 16 by out-
scoring the Lady Fish 9-5 to
close out the game.
Tillamook led from start
to finish in Game 3, but As-
toria answered with a strong
start (5-0) in Game 4.
With sophomores Chel-
sea Christensen and Dar-
ian Hagemen playing key
roles, along with freshman
Samantha Hemsley, Astoria
managed to build a 17-13
lead.
The Cheesemakers forced
ties at 22 and 23, but strong
play at the net by Hunt was
too much to overcome, as
Astoria scored the final two
points for their lone win.
The momentum carried
over to Game 4 as the Lady
Fish grabbed an 8-2 lead,
highlighted by Hunt’s kill
off a set from Grafton and an
ace serve by Christensen.
Tillamook rallied again
and tied the game at 17-17,
then used a power kill by
