Loggers, Warriors get defensive
By GARY HENLEY
The Daily Astorian
KNAPPA — Sometimes the game
doesn’t quite live up to the hype.
That was the case Friday night at
Knappa, where the Loggers beat War-
renton 24-8 in Clatsop County’s other
“Clash.”
A Warriors vs. Loggers football
game usually gets the reputation as be-
ing a “close, hard-fought classic.”
Friday night’s nonleague game may
have been hard-fought, but it wasn’t
close, and it certainly wasn’t a classic.
The game had a combined nine turn-
overs, including back-to-back fumbles
in the opening minute.
Entering the annual showdown with
the Loggers, the Warriors had outscored
their last three opponents (Willamina,
Neah-Kah-Nie, Nestucca) by a com-
bined 98-2.
The difference Friday? The War-
riors weren’t playing Willamina, Neah-
Kah-Nie or Nestucca.

passes, recovered a fumble, and limit-
ed Warrenton to just 150 yards in total
offense.
The Warriors brought a tough de-
fense of their own. In Knappa’s 34-14
win over Waldport the week before,
Andrew Goozee rushed for 315 yards

came from the defense. Knappa’s

and Warrenton’s Raymund Alcobendas
stepped in front of a Logger pass and
returned it 60 yards for a touchdown
with 4:15 left in the game.
Knappa freshman Tyler Green had
two interceptions, with additional picks
by Geisler, Dakota Severson and Ma-
son Hoover.
Prior to the game, Green changed
his uniform number from 88 to 15, to
honor his grandfather Kenneth Green,
who died Friday.
“Kenny was a huge part of our
community and many kids’ lives,” said
Knappa coach Aaron Barendse. “I’m so
proud of Tyler for stepping up on such
an emotional day and making a memo-
ry he will never forget. An unbelievably
special day.”
The Loggers (2-3 overall) begin
league play this week with a home
game against Gaston (1-4).
Warrenton, the only team in the
Lewis & Clark League with a winning
record (3-2), hosts Corbett Friday.
Fishermen 28, Valiants 2
BEAVERTON — Astoria bounced
back from last week’s loss to Scap-
poose with a more enjoyable 28-2 win
at Valley Catholic Friday night.
The Fishermen ended their two-
game losing skid by building a 20-0
halftime lead, then rushing by the Val-
iants in the second half.

“It went pretty well,” Johnson said.
“Seaside came in kind of beat up —
their quarterback (Otto Hoekstre) got
hurt the week before and was out. We
played pretty good. We’re starting to

working hard and putting in a lot of
time, so it was nice to see us get a win.”
Alex Barker had a 4-yard run in the
second quarter for Seaside’s only score.
Johnson, a graduate of Astoria High
School, will bring the Cheesemakers to
his hometown later this week, when the
Fishermen host Tillamook on home-
coming night at CMH Field.
“It will be nice to be back up there,”
Johnson said. “It helps having played
in the jamboree there (in August). And
we’ve been remarkably healthy, knock
on wood. We haven’t had any injuries.”
