“We looked in Astoria for
property and there just wasn’t
any locations there that would
be feasible and work,” Merila
said. “Oregon Youth Authori-
ty, Medix and even Costco. All
of this area is elevated enough
it’s out of the tsunami zone. It’s
a matter of there is land here.
We looked in Astoria, and there
were not any areas to build.”
Warrenton Mayor Mark Ku-
jala said his city has become
an attractive place to develop
since there is plenty of afford-
able, centrally-located land out-
side the tsunami zone.
“There are a number of es-
sential services, social services
and community services that
are wanting to be central in the
county. Warrenton is centrally
located,” Kujala said. “We have
the land to develop and that is
what is happening. People are
recognizing that Warrenton is a
growing hub for both commer-
cial activity and these services
as well.”
Moving in
The new Warrenton office is
about 9,000 square feet, more
than 1,000 square feet larger
than the old location in Astoria.
Merila said the layout of the
new office will be more effi-
cient. The office connects di-
rectly to a large shop area that
can store trucks and boats from
the OSP Fish and Wildlife Di-
vision.
Cort Dokken, an state police
general services manager, said
the office is being specially
built to withstand earthquakes
and other natural disasters.
The state police did a similar
office relocation in Coos Bay
about five years ago.
Keeping the Clatsop County
office open during a disaster is
important, Dokken said, con-
sidering the other closest area
command office is in Newport.
Smaller worksites are in Tilla-
mook and St. Helens.
Having a sturdy building
will help keep the local office
open during a major event.
“If something bad happens
we should still be able to oper-
ate,” Dokken said.
