THE BEST OF THE WORST CALLS TO ASTORIA 911 DISPATCH EO Media Group ildlife photographer Neal Maine captured the annual movement of sooty shearwaters in early September. Thousands of the birds appeared in the near shore ocean and came close enough to shore to photograph. Many folks ask about this bird streaming by Gearhart and Seaside. Studies indicate that the sooty shearwaters travel the longest animal migration routes ever recorded, 39,000 miles. The birds breed in New Zealand and Chile and migrate to feeding grounds in the Northern Hemisphere, including Seaside. Blown away S ometimes, the police blotter appears ripped from the mind of a 20th cen- tury surrealist. This is one of those times. We have the homeless guy in the cemetery stealing trinkets off head- stones. The kids playing on the sea lion carcass. Two dudes with swords. And — our favorite — the woman with a short dress and heels walking across the New Youngs Bay Bridge. The emergency caller was concerned because it was windy ...
