THE DAILY ASTORIAN • WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2015 SPORTS 7A Catlin Gabel posts opening night shutout By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian WARRENTON — The Astoria boys soccer team kicked off the 2015 season against an old rival Tuesday, as the Fishermen hosted Cat- lin Gabel in a nonleague game at Volunteer Field. And for the second year in a row, the Eagles opened with a shutout victory over Astoria, as Catlin Gabel soph- omore Keegan Kaas scored two ¿rst half goals on the way to a 5-0 win for the Eagles. Catlin’s pressure defense shut down and shut out the Fishermen, who had just four shots on goal for the night. Cole Beeson had a pair of solid attempts in the second half, both knocked down by the Eagles’ goalkeeper. Catlin Gabel peppered the Fishermen net with 14 shots on goal. The ¿rst three were saved by Astoria keeper Kyle Birge, before Kaas scored at the 145 mark of the ¿rst half, slipping a shot past Birge up the middle from 15 yards out. It was Kaas again at 22:25, as a soft attempt from the right side slipped through the hands of Birge. Catlin junior Charley Ward scored the third goal, a line drive from 25 yards away for a 3-0 halftime lead. The Eagles tacked on two more goals in the ¿rst 1:10 of the second half, the ¿nal score on a penalty kick from Ward. Astoria’s Elijah Hirsch made saves on several more Catlin Gabel attempts. Astoria returns to play Saturday against North Bend. The game will be played at Newport. Volleyball Warrenton def. Seaside WARRENTON — War- renton cruised past Seaside in a nonleague volleyball contest at Warrenton, 25-18, 25-21, 26-24. Libby Biel was 100 per- cent from service line (20-for- 20) with eight aces and sev- en kills to lead the Warriors, while Ally Bentley added six kills and led a strong defen- sive effort. Warrenton’s Asia Lambert made some crucial digs late in Game 3, and had 21 digs total. “The hustle helped keep Astoria’s Rafael Alcantar, No. 10, fights for the ball with Catlin Gabel’s Juma Sei, No. 32, during the second half of their soccer match Monday. Run with the Fishermen Photos by Joshua Bessex/The Daily Astorian Astoria High School’s cross country program will be hosting the annual “Run with the Fishermen” at 6 p.m. Thursday at Coffen- bury Lake. The race will be fol- lowed by a potluck at pic- nic Shelter A. All AHS alumni and Astoria cross country sup- porters are invited to join in the race or cheer on the current Fishermen cross country team. The scenic course is slightly less than 3 miles and follows the trail around the lake. There is no cost for the race, though student-athletes will have Gold Cards for sale and donations to AHS Cross Country will be accepted. But once we honed in our serving, the girls were on ¿re. All girls were serving spots tonight.” Claire Bussert had 18 as- sists and Lexie Lumberg add- ed 10. Landree Miethe had four kills for the Warriors, who open league play Thurs- day at Portland Adventist. “Overall, we just had a lot of unforced errors,” said Sea- side coach Angie Huntsman. “But I give Warrenton a lot of credit. They’ve been working really hard, and it shows.” Astoria’s Luis Herrejon, No. 8, fights for posses- sion with Catlin Gabel’s Hemming Juergens, No. 25, during the second half of the soccer match.
