A lifetime of adventure on the water
Willapa Bay Life-Saving Station Crew 1882: This photo is believed
to depict the crew at the station shortly after Keeper Alfred Stream
(seated, center with medal) received the Gold Life Saving Medal for
heroism in saving the crew of the British steamer Lammerlaw.
Life-Saving Station Point Adams, Ore., August 1898: Crews at the new surfboat stations along the Oregon and Washington
coasts were typically seven men. They added two crew members for the summer months.
Point Adams Station, Ore., October 1916: This is a photo of the station after it was rebuilt because erosion suffered in
1913-14 forced the Life-Saving Service to move it farther back from the Columbia River banks. The station was rebuilt again
by October 1938, and that station still stands in Hammond, Ore. (now home to NOAA offices).
Lightship No. 88 in drydock 1917: This vessel served on station
to mark the entrance to the channel of the Columbia River from
1909-1939.
