3B THE DAILY ASTORIAN • FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 2015 Daughters of the American Revolution sponsor contests Astoria Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, in con- junction with the National Society DAR, is sponsoring several stu- dent contests for the coming school year. This year the theme for the American History essay for grades five through eight is “A Colonial Family’s Reaction to the Stamp Act.” Writers should describe a colonial family’s discussion about the Stamp Act, and what role it played in organizing the colonists against the British King and Parlia- ment. The Christopher Columbus es- say contest is open to students grades nine through 12. The ti- tle of the essay is “Columbus and Lindbergh: A Journey Across the Atlantic.” Students are asked to discuss the similarities and dif- ferences between Christopher Co- lumbus’ voyage to the new world and Charles Lindbergh’s first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. What effect did the 400 years be- tween their accomplishments have on what each man hoped to achieve, the challenges they faced, and the skills essential to their success? Information regarding the selec- tion of a Good Citizen from each high school senior class is also in- cluded in the contest packet, along with information on completing an essay that may result in a scholar- ship for the student. The NSDAR has many scholar- ships for students both graduating high school and for those already in college. These can be found at www.dar.org. Each of these contests has mon- etary awards for winners at sever- al levels. Information on the Ju- nior American Citizens Contests, which are open to youth from preschool through grade 12, in- cluding other groups outside of school, can also be found on the website. These contests involve various forms of art work as well as writing skills. The theme this year is “Cel- ebrate America.” For information on any of the contests, contact Sandra Fuller at 503-325-2419.
