Crews train
for earthquake
response at
Camp Rilea

WARRENTON — Search
and rescue crews scrambled
over concrete blocks, ducked
into storage containers and
climbed over smashed cars
searching for victims.
At a nearby lake, a U.S.
Coast Guard dive team con-
ducted a water rescue opera-
tion. Volunteers carried people
out of the woods on stretchers
and helped them to a medical
tent.
The victims were fake, but
the lessons were real.

ers, military personnel, and vol-
unteers descended upon Camp
Rilea Armed Forces Training
Center Tuesday and Wednes-
day for an earthquake response
training exercise.
The 3ath¿nder 0inutemen
2015 Exercise, now in its third
year, is a multiagency, mul-
tistate operation designed to
help plan a response to a major
earthquake.
“What we’re doing here is
bringing civilian, military, ¿rst
responders, and volunteers
together so that we can train
together, understand each oth-
er’s lingo and acronyms,” Nick
Choy, public affairs of¿cer for
3ath¿nder 0inutemen, said.
“We all need to speak the same
language, because when one of
these things happens we are all
going to have to work togeth-
er.”
The exercise also allowed
for people to make mistakes
and learn from them.
“You want to have those
hiccups and ¿ts and starts now
during an exercise like this,”
Choy said. “You don’t want to
go through those things during
an actual earthquake response,
that’s too late.”
