Willis Van Dusen
Willis L. Van Dusen was elected mayor of Astoria in
1990 and served as mayor for 24 years. He was on the City
Council for six years prior to that. Van Dusen has united
disparate groups to complete countless community proj-
ects, including the Garden of Surging Waves Chinese
Heritage Park, restoration of the Astoria Column, the
Astoria Riverfront Trolley, the Astoria Aquatic Center and
the CMH Sports Complex.
The Van Dusen family arrived in Astoria in 1847 and
established Oregon’s Oldest Family Business in 1849.
Originally Van Dusen Mercantile, the business evolved and
has been the local Pepsi-Cola and Dr Pepper bottler since
1947. He is president of Van Dusen Beverages, Inc., as the
company is known today.
Van Dusen graduated from the University of Oregon in
business administration. He is married to his high school
sweetheart, the former Jan Poindexter. Together they have
five grown children, one granddaughter and are expecting
another grandchild in 2015.
He is president of Astoria Riverfront Trolley Association,
a trustee of the Columbia River Maritime Museum, board
member of the Oregon Soft Drink Association and board
member of the Friends of the Astoria Column.
