After a morning interview session with a panel of three judges, the
four princesses will share their speeches one last time with friends and
family at the Regatta Coronation. Each princess is speaking about a
decade of music, our history and the Regatta, so you’ll have the oppor-
tunity to step back in time and enjoy the flavor of the era, while learn-
ing more about the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s on the North Coast.
The talented Maddox Dancers will entertain the audience while the
judges deliberate. Queen Claire Helligso will be ending her reign with
her farewell speech and the crowning of the new queen.
For as long as there has been an Astoria Regatta, there has been a
royal court, made up of our county’s finest young high school women.
Our Regatta Court represents our area through community speaking en-
gagements and media announcements, by traveling to Pacific North-
west parades and hosting other courts and visitors. Each year, the Astoria
Regatta Association presents scholarships to our court members to help
them pursue their college goals.
This year, $18,500 in scholarships were given out to the 2014 court
members from the Astoria Regatta Scholarship Fund, Riedel Regatta
Scholarship Endowment Fund and the Patti Hankel Nelson Queen
Scholarship Fund. Court members for the current year are incoming high
school seniors, and the Regatta Association encourages young women
who will be sophomores this year at Astoria, Warrenton, Knappa or Sea-
side high schools to apply next year for this wonderful opportunity.
Once again, we have an impressive group of young women com-
prising our Regatta Court, so please join us to share in the excitement of
the crowning moment and help us honor our 2014 and 2015 Regatta
queens Thursday evening.
A reception in the McTavish Room will immediately follow the cer-
emony. Cake, coffee and punch will be served. This will be the perfect
opportunity for you to greet our Regatta Court and congratulate our
newly-crowned 2015 Regatta queen.

Kimberly Castro
Queen Claire Helligso, daughter of Shawn and Miranda Helligso,
graduated from Astoria High School last spring. Helligso grew up with
the Regatta.
“The whole festival has a place in my heart,” she said.
For anyone interested in becoming Regatta royalty, she said “100
percent go for it.”
“It really makes you become a better person,” Helligso said.
Being part of the court helps nurture public speaking, community in-
volvement and personal growth, she said.
Helligso has been involved with dance since the age of 3, a company
member of Maddox Dance Studio since she was 7 and also a member of
AHS Pizazz dance team for four years. She has received many honors
through dance, and she has served as a captain of the Pizazz team for two
years. Helligso is a member of National Honor Society, and was awarded
honor roll every semester in high school.
Helligso is enrolled in Pacific Lutheran University’s nursing program
this fall and plans to minor in dance.
Every weekend, incoming Astoria High School senior Kimberly Castro
writes a schedule so she’s prepared for the busy week ahead. Involved
doesn’t even begin to describe her. Castro is her student body secretary for
the second year during her high school career. She’s participated in school
and outreach projects, taken part in a myriad of activities, held jobs and
consistently volunteered. On top of that, Castro, the daughter of Minerva
Monroy, was East Portland’s Miss Pageant Spirit.
“Giving back to the community is like saying thank you for raising me,”
Castro said.
Castro said the town is the perfect size, so she’s able to make
connections within a supportive community.
“It’s so much easier to make relationships, like real relationships with
people,” she said.
Castro has had many rewarding Regatta experiences so far. Her mother
has helped her with her speech and been really involved, and as Castro
delivered that speech, she could see people connecting to it.
After graduation, she plans to attend Western Oregon University to get
a Ph.D. in forensic psychology.
