Astoria football dominates summer action
The Daily Astorian
Fifty-three members of the
Astoria High School football
program attended the Camp
Rilea Football Camp, held
July 11-14.
The turnout represented
Astoria’s largest group at the
annual camp, which the Fish-
ermen have been attending
since the summer of 2008.
Astoria’s varsity teams
earned camp championships
in the 7-on-7 passing tourna-
ment and the “Linemen Chal-
lenge,” which tests the skills
of offensive and defensive
linemen in agility, quickness
and strength.
Sixteen varsity programs
attended the camp, including
teams from Canada, Alaska,
Washington state and Oregon.
Astoria coach Howard Rub
said, “We were very pleased to
have such a great turnout. We
had a lot of incoming fresh-
men as well as a few sopho-
mores that have never played
football prior to attending the
camp join us, which made for
a great program effort. I am
excited for our kids for earning
the varsity championships.
“Our guys showed great
competitive spirit,” he said.
“We learned a lot about each
other and a lot about what we
need to do in order to become
the team we hope to be for the
2015 season.”
It was the ¿rst time since
2010 that the Fishermen were
able to sweep both the Line-
men Challenge and the 7-on-7
passing tournament.
Rub thanked all the volun-
teers who helped at the camp,
and local businesses Astoria
Ford, Nygaard Logging and
Columbia Memorial Hospi-
tal with contributions of time
and/or money.
Astoria High School and
Middle School coaches vol-
unteered, along with parents,
members of the Astoria vol-
leyball team, and Seaside
High strength and condition-
ing coach Dan Leary.
Football camp Aug. 3
The Astoria High School
football coaching staff, along
with current members of the
Fishermen football program,
will be conducting a four-day
camp Aug. 3-6 for any stu-
dents entering kindergarten
through eighth grade this fall.
The camp will take place
at Columbia Memorial Field,
from 5:30 to 7 p.m. each day.
Cost is $30 per participant
or $50 per family. Camp fee
includes free admission to the
AHS Football Commitment
Camp the following week for
any interested (fall 2015) sev-
enth or eighth graders.
Registration will begin at
5 p.m. each day of the camp.
For more information,
contact coach Howard Rub at
503-298-9419, or via email at
hrub@astoria.k12.or.us.
This year’s camp is a ser-
vice project for Astoria senior
Wyatt Dietrich. Participants
will also have an opportuni-
ty to register for the Astoria
Youth Football season, which
begins Monday, Aug. 10.
Volleyball camp Aug. 4
The North Coast Volley-
ball Camp is set for Aug. 4-6,
from 9:30 to 11 a.m. each day
at Astoria High School.
The camp is open to all boys
and girls who will be in third
to eighth grades next fall. Cost
is $40 if registered by July 31,
$45 if registered after July 31.
All proceeds will bene¿t
the AHS volleyball players
and programs.
Hot dogs: Vehicles can become like ovens

they crack the windows, that’s
enough,” Workman said.
But the windows need to be
rolled down all the way to al-
low the kind of air circulation
needed to keep the internal tem-
perature of the car from rising to
dangerous levels.
Most of Warrenton’s calls
were made regarding dogs left
behind in parking lots outside
big-box stores like Fred Mey-
er, Costco and The Home De-
pot.
Workman’s recommenda-
tion? Unless the dogs can come
along, leave them at home.
Leave dogs at home
Veterinarian Dannell Da-
vis agrees. If the temperature
is more than 65 degrees, she
says, leave the dogs at home.
Davis, who works at As-
toria Animal Hospital, has
worked in Astoria for 10 years.
During that time, she has seen
cases of animals suffering
from being left in hot cars.
“It absolutely can happen
here,” she said.
She remembers a case
that happened about seven
years ago. A dog came to her
with a temperature of 107
degrees. She managed to
save the dog.

Dannell Davis, a veterinar-
ian, takes steps to spread
awareness about leaving
dogs in cars.
“It was pretty unnerving
for anyone who witnessed this
poor dog,” Davis said.
Vehicles can become like
ovens, she said, effectively
cooking the animals alive.
“A lot of times, they’re col-
lapsed,” Davis said. “They’re
in the process of dying.”
Davis takes steps to spread
awareness about the problem.
She does not allow people to
leave animals of any kind in
vehicles in her parking lot and
talks to her clients about the
dangers. She also talks to lo-
cal businesses about keeping
an eye out for animals in cars
and recommends posting signs
Mary LaPlante Krettler re-
members a Yorkshire terrier left
in a car outside her shop, Com-
mercial Street Antiques and
Collectibles, last summer. She
recalled that it was a little more
than 70 degrees outside, and
even though the windows were
rolled down about 2 inches, she
decided to call the police when
the owners had not returned af-
ter nearly an hour. The owners
were not grateful about their
dog’s rescue. Instead, LaPlante
Krettler said the man yelled at
her.
“I just don’t want any trag-
edies out here,” she said. That

warning others of the risk.
“It requires vigilance on ev-
eryone’s part,” Davis said.
What should be done if
there is an animal in distress
in a car?
Davis recommends calling
the police and staying at the
scene, recording important
data like time, date, license
plate numbers and a descrip-
tion of what is going on.
Luckily, Davis has not seen
any cases related to hot cars
this year.
Animal-related complaints
within Astoria can be directed
to the Astoria Police Depart-
ment.

Mary LaPlante Krettler, owner of Commercial Street An-
tiques and Collectibles, visits with Chauncey, a regular

is the reason she welcomes
dogs to her shop with a sign on
her door and water and treats

dogs.
“I’m always welcoming
