Birth Ontario 48/89 Bend 47/89 Medford 60/104 The Nature Conservancy is seeking volunteers for a work party Aug. 8 to man- age Blind Slough Swamp in Brownsmead, according to a news release from the con- servancy. The Blind Slough Swamp is a tidal Sitka spruce swamp and provides habitat along the Columbia River for many species. Volunteers will remove invasive purple loosestrife, a flowering plant of (urope- an origin, from the preserve. Its seeds can float, so it can spread very easily, accord- ing to Debbie Pickering, O r- egon C oast ecologist for the Nature Conservancy. “It invades wetlands ar- eas and tends to take over the whole area and crowd out the native vegetation that the native wildlife needs,” Pickering said. “So it’s a big threat to native wildlife.” The volunteers will use canoes to paddle the swamp, getting out to re- move the plant using a pronged tool to dig up the roots. The plants will then be put in plastic bags and either composted or sent to Saturday, Aug. 1 PAG(, Denzel “Denny ² Celebration of life at 11 a.m., Astoria <acht Club, at the West (nd Mooring Basin, 300 Industry St., Suite 201.
