IT’S ALL ABOUT EXPERIENCE
Ilwaco wrestlers
host 300 at
three-day camp
ILWACO, Wash. — With
more than 300 in attendance
at last weekend’s three-day
wrestling camp at Ilwaco
High School, the organizers
thought they should probably
start out with a little motiva-
tion.
What they got was Dan
Russell, a four-time national
champion at Portland State
University, who just so hap-
pened to be in the area on a
¿shing trip with 1ate Carr, a
bronze medal-winning Olym-
pian.
“Before we start, I want
everybody to step off the
mat, and I want you to close
your eyes and I want you to
ask yourself, ‘Am I ready
to give 100 percent?’” said
Russell as he addressed the
amassed group in the center
of Aase Gymnasium Friday
afternoon. “When you’re
ready, I want you to step on
this mat and make a dec-
laration. I want you to say
‘YEEEAAAHHHH!!!’” The
noise echoed around the qui-
et gym.
Anyone who knows Ilwa-
co junior Alec Bell should not
have been surprised that he
was the ¿rst one back on the
mats, whooping it up by him-
self, until the others joined
him.
Carr then gave a brief
demonstration of a takedown
technique before turning from
grappling to God. He evange-
lizing for around 10 minutes
before having the group pray
together.
Unlike the wrestling camp
the Ilwaco Fishermen partic-
ipated in earlier this summer,
this camp was a particularly
physical one, with each wres-
tler scheduled to have up to 16
matches over the three days.
“Any time you can get on
the mat and get more expe-
rience is a bene¿t,” said Il-

waco coach .evin 0c1ulty,
who noted that the majority
of the teams in attendance
were from larger classi¿ca-
tion schools in both Oregon
and Washington. “We’re
wrestling the big boys. But it
bodes well (for us) in season.
They just have to get over the
fact that it doesn’t matter the
classi¿cation. You just have
to show up and wrestle your
opponent.”
The Ilwaco Fishermen had
about 20 wrestlers turn out
for the camp. Among them
was sophomore Royce Murry,
who won his ¿rst match af-
ter pulling an unconventional
barrel-roll move. Murry said
he was looking forward to all

the opportunities to be on the
mat wrestling.
“Being able to wrestle dif-
people,” he said. “The other
(camp) was set up more like
a practice, to learn new tech-
ferent people that you haven’t
before. Having fun and learn-
ing new things from other
niques. Here coaches can see
how you might do in the fu-
ture.”

GE1E9A — One of the
seven FIFA of¿cials arrested
in Zurich as part of a corrup-
tion probe has been extradited
to the United States, the Swiss
Justice Ministry said Thurs-
day.
The Federal Office of
Justice said the man, whom
it did not identify, was extra-
dited on Wednesday after 50
days of detention in Switzer-
land.
“He was handed over to
a three-man U.S. police es-
cort in Zurich who accompa-
nied him on the Àight to 1ew
York,” the ministry said in a
statement.
The of¿cial agreed last
week to be extradited, unlike
six others who are ¿ghting ex-
tradition.
The extradition hearings
are being held by Zurich
cantonal (state) police in a
process expected to ¿nish
by early September, Swiss
justice of¿ce spokesman Ra-
phael Frei told the Associated
Press on Thursday. Appeals to
Switzerland’s federal criminal
court and supreme court can
extend the cases by several
months.
The extradited man is ac-
cused of “accepting bribes
totaling millions of dollars in
connection with the sale of
marketing rights to various
sports marketing ¿rms and
keeping the money for him-
self,” the justice of¿ce said
last week.
All seven men were arrest-
ed on May 27 in dawn raids
on a luxury hotel in Zurich
by Swiss federal police at the
request of American federal
agencies.
They include FIFA vice
president Jeffrey Webb of the
Cayman Islands and former
FIFA vice president Eugenio
Figueredo of Uruguay. Both
have been suspended from
football duty by FIFA’s ethics
committee.
The others are: Jose Ma-
ria Marin, who led Brazil’s
2014 World Cup organizing
committee; Eduardo Li, an
elected member of FIFA’s ex-
ecutive committee and presi-
dent of Costa Rica’s football
federation; FIFA staffer Julio
Rocha, a development of¿cer
from 1icaragua; 9enezuela
federation president Rafael
Esquivel; and Costas Takkas,
a Briton who works for CO1-
CACAF President Webb.
A total of 14 men — nine
football of¿cials and ¿ve mar-
keting executives — were in-
dicted by the U.S. Department
of Justice in May, including
disgraced former FIFA vice
president Jack Warner, who
is resisting extradition from
Trinidad and Tobago.
A further four, including
American former FIFA exec-
utive member Chuck Blazer
and two sons of Warner, had
their guilty pleas unsealed in
May.
They are alleged to have
taken part in a racketeering
of the Copa America tourna-
ment.
Blazer admitted sharing in
a $10 million bribe scheme
with Warner and a third FIFA
voter to support South Africa’s
successful bid for the 2010
World Cup. South African of¿-
cials asked FIFA to transfer the
money through the governing
body’s accounts.
U.S. authorities have said
more indictments should fol-
low, and FIFA President Sepp
Blatter is a target of the wid-
ening case.
