Ave. in Warrenton, is holding
a dog adoption event and bar-
becue for the Clatsop County
Animal Shelter from 11 a.m.
to 2 p.m. Saturday. The bar-
becue is courtesy of Cash and
Carry in Warrenton.
Clatsop Animal Assis-
tance volunteers are bring-
ing adoptable dogs from the
county shelter, all hoping

Partners for Performing Arts Center adopt landscape
The Partners for the Per-
forming Arts Center have

and have been maintaining
and working on it for the past
three years. “Our most stal-
wart volunteers have been
Jan and John Nybakke,” Car-
ol Smith said.
Recently, the Partners were
the recipients of some healthy
landscape materials, donated
by Clatsop Community Col-
lege as part of the relocation of
landscaping for the Patriot Hall
renovation. CCC maintenance
staff members Brad Green
and Peri Drew helped move
plants from the campus to the
Performing Arts Center , along
with Janet and Lloyd Bowler
and Charlene Larsen.
Judy Shatto, Alvis Porter
and Ron Larsen have helped
with weeding the grounds
and parking lot in the last
month to prepare the beds for
these plants, and for new top-
soil, which is being provided
through a
Thrivent Financial Service
Team Grant. Partners for the
Performing Arts Center also
hosted several cleanup days
during May, during which
numerous volunteers swept,
vacuumed, cleaned and sham-
pooed rugs.
“The plant material is
thriving in its new location,
and the PAC looks loved and
cared for,” Smith said.
Pug owners meet to socialize dogs
WARRENTON — The
Pug Socializing Club meets
at 1 p.m. Saturday, and ev-
ery second Saturday of the
month, through October, at
Carruthers Park in Warren-
ton.
“We hope pugs from
Knappa to Cannon Beach,
the Long Beach Peninsula,
Wash., area and beyond will
attend,” Dave Kinney, orga-
nizer of the group and own-
er of two pugs, said. “Pugs
love to play, and pug own-
ers love to talk about their
pugs, so all will benefit.”
The group helps pug
owners socialize their dogs,
and members exchange
pointers and information.

Ancient Civilizations
Wax Museum
On June 5, the sixth -grad-
ers at Astoria Middle School
put together and performed
in the ninth annual Ancient
Civilizations Wax Museum.
Throughout the year, students
have studied the civilizations
of Mesopotamia, Egypt, In-
dia, China, Greece and Rome,
including the geography, his-
WRULFDOO\ VLJQL¿FDQW LQGLYLGX
als, culture and major contri-
butions of each area.
At the end of the school
year, each student is as-
signed an individual, god,
goddess or invention from
one of the civilizations stud-
ied. The student then com-
pletes research in order to
write and perform a speech
on their topic, complete with
costume and props, for their
parents, friends, and fellow
students. Fifth-grade stu-
dents from Lewis and Clark
Elementary School attend
each year and get a glimpse
of topics they will be learn-
ing about, and also to get a
friendly orientation to the
school they will be attending
as sixth -graders.
“Each year the Astoria
Middle School communi-
ty is very proud of what
our students accomplish
and how well they are able
to share with others what
they’ve learned throughout
the year,” Craig Hoppes,
superintendent of the As-
toria School District said.
“Thank you to all who have
supported this event and our
students.”

the engagement of their daughter, Brooke Ceder-
berg of Warrenton, to Christopher Brecht, also of
Warrenton.
He is the son of Christopher Brecht of Svensen and
Dana and Mike Larsen of Warrenton.
The bride-to-be is a Warrenton High School
graduate, and attended Clatsop Community Col-
lege. She is currently at Job Corps studying dental
assisting.
The prospective groom graduated from Warrenton
High School. He is in the U.S. Army, currently sta-
tioned in Maryland.
A July 5 wedding is planned in Astoria.

community at the Big Gay
Skate Night, hosted by the
Lower Columbia Q Center in
conjunction with the Shang-
haied Roller Dolls, Saturday
at the Astoria Armory. It starts
at 8:15 p.m., immediately fol-
lowing the Roller Dolls’ bout.
The event is for all ages, and
is a family-friendly event. All
are welcome.
The cost for entry is $3 for
adults, and $2 for skate rental.
Kids get in free. Donations
in excess of the entry fee are
welcome and appreciated. DJ
Elive will be spinning, and a
snack bar will be provided by
the Lower Columbia Q Center.
