Gull golfers add another
Cowapa League title
The Daily Astorian
BANKS — Golfers from As-
toria, Banks, Scappoose, Seaside,
Tillamook and Valley Catholic
gathered Monday, for what is like-
ly the last District 1/4A (Cowapa
League) tournament, hosted by
the Braves at Quail Valley Golf
Course.
With state qualifying taking
place next week in regionals,
there’s no longer a need for the
district tournaments. The District
1/4A meet will not be held next
year.
And while Valley Catholic
won Monday’s tournament (four-
stroke victory over Seaside), the
Gulls came away with the Cow-
apa League title by virtue of an
undefeated regular season. Valley
Catholic shot 322 to secure Mon-
day’s win, to Seaside’s 326. Scap-
poose was third at 352, followed
by Tillamook (365) and Astoria
(386). Banks was unable to field a
complete team.
Tillamook freshman Carter
Lee came away with medalist
honors by shooting a four-over-
par 76.
Valley Catholic’s Ryan Schmid-
lin and Nick Tranquil finished tied
for second with a pair of 77’s, fol-
lowed by a flock of Seagulls.
Shane Fritter was fourth with a
79, followed by Sam Hinton (80).
Kevin LaCoste was in a three-way
tie for sixth at 81. Trenten Mey-
er finished 10th with an 86, as all
four Seaside seniors made the all-
league team.
Also on the all-league team
were Ross Philippi of Banks, John
Woodruff of Valley Catholic and
Nathan Mapes of Scappoose.
Astoria was led by Will Keer-
an with a 92, followed by Ron
Schumacher (94), Kirk Fausett
and Joey Voeller (100) and Arthur
Clark (103).
“This tournament should be a
good lesson for us,” said Seaside
coach Jim Poetsch. “We have too
many people saying we should win
a state title before even qualifying
for the tournament. We need to ig-
nore the hype and go out and earn
anything we get from here on out.
Fastabend named AHS soccer coach
The Daily Astorian
Tim Fastabend is Astoria High
School’s new varsity boys soccer
coach, Athletic Director Howard
Rub announced Monday.
Fastabend replaces Bill Patterson,
who recently resigned to become the
head women’s soccer coach at Port-
land Community College.
Fastabend has been a local youth
soccer coach since the summer of 2000
and has served as a volunteer high
school coach for both the Astoria boys
and girls since fall 2011.
“Valley Catholic is a very good
team, as is Marshfield and prob-
ably a team or two from which I
haven’t seen scores,” he said. “We
are a good team, but we will need
to perform well next week to get
to the state tournament.”
Fritter had the only even-par
nine of the tournament, as he
scored an Eagle on the 17th hole
to shoot 36 on the back nine.
Hinton “was right behind
Shane without the excitement, as
he went the day without any holes
under par,” Poetsch said. “Earli-
er in the day, we pointed out that
the pressure lay with Trenten and
Kevin to give us a good counting
score and they came through to-
day.
“Trenten gave us a good score
and Kevin went above that and
led all of our players though 16
holes. Having those two guys put
up good numbers kept us close in
this tournament.
“Fortunately we beat Valley in
our dual earlier this season and
are able to get a league title foe
these seniors.”
He has also served as the Lower
Columbia Youth Soccer Association
president (2010-14).
³&RDFK )DVWDEHQG LV D JUHDW ¿W
to assume the role of our head boys
coach at this time,” Rub said. “He un-
derstands the philosophies of the AHS
Athletic Department and what we
hope to provide for our student-ath-
letes. Coach Fastabend is widely re-
spected in Clatsop County for his work
with LCYSA and his work as a local
businessman.
“He is a lifelong Astorian and has
great pride in AHS athletics.”
