Joseph and E velyn G erm ann L eahy of A storia,
E velyn L eahy H ankel w as born at hom e on
K ensington A venu e M arch 31, 1919. She attend ed
Star of the Sea School and M arylhu rst U niversity
and then transferred to O regon C ollege of
E d u cation (now W estern O regon U niversity)
w hich is w here she m et her fu tu re
hu sband H alland W . H ankel. T hey w ere planning
a spring 1942 w ed d ing bu t the attack on P earl
H arbor and the m ilitary activation of H alland
m ad e them change the w ed d ing to D ecem ber
1941. D u ring the w ar years w hen her hu sband w as
overseas she lived in A storia w ith her parents and
tw o sm all child ren. A fter the w ar she em barked
u pon the life of the w ife of an arm y officer and his
career took them to m any assignm ents inclu d ing
fou r overseas. D u ring those years, the size of the
fam ily increased so that by the tim e her hu sband
retired there w ere ten child ren born at variou s
places arou nd the w orld .
E velyn loved teaching school and m anaged to
su ccessfu lly com bine being a loving w ife and m other to a large fam ily w ith teaching w henever possibl e. She
tau ght at L ew is and C lark E lem entary, Star of the Sea School, W arrenton G rad e School and w as princip al
and su perintend ent at O lney G rad e School. She even tau ght at a school in O kinaw a, Japan.
W riting w as her passion . She w as a pu blished au thor of poetry and w on aw ard s for her
poem s. G enealogy research and local history w ere her special interests, especially since her fam ily first
hom estead ed in the A storia area in 1879. She w as the co-fou nd er of C latsop C ou nty H istorical
Society’s C u m tu x m agazine and w rote nu m erou s articles abou t local fam ilies and history for that
pu blication and others. She enjoyed w riting letters to fam ou s people. W hen she read that Q u een E li zabeth
II’s yacht w ou ld be passing by, she w rote and invited her to stop in A storia for a cu p of tea and re ceived a
note politely d eclining.
She had a lifelong association w ith St. M ary Star of the Sea C hu rch and School and spent m any hou r s
of volu nteer service to both. She w as an active m em ber and presid ent of the A ltar Society and a str ong
su pporter of Star of the Sea School w hich she had attend ed and w as sorry w hen it closed .
Fam ily w as very im portant to E velyn. She w as the d evoted w ife of L t. C ol. H alland W . H ankel w ho
passed aw ay in 1987. She had a close relationship w ith her siblings d u ring their lives: her brothe rs Joseph
J. and W illiam J. L eahy and her sisters P atricia L eahy A lfonse and Joanne L eahy A nd rich. She organ ized
large fam ily gatherings every year ou t at the original L eahy fam ily hom estead in O lney and this trad ition
w ill continu e in her m em ory.
She w ill be fond ly rem em bered and m issed by her
