    astoria’s sea lions
crossing guards
Astoria Sunday Market is
pleased to partner with
River Song Foundaon to
provide Crossing Guard
services each Sunday at
12th & Commercial and
12th & Duane. These are
volunteers
and
in
exchange for helping us
out we are donang funds
to help their foundaon!
The “Arrp, Arrp, Arrp” of Astoria’s sea lions echo and reverberate throughout the town and this year be
prepared for an even greater chorus as more than 2000 of these boisterous beasts have taken up residence
in our community.
Most of the sea lions tend to congregate at Pier 39 but this year they are all along the river walk and
somemes even on the river walk! While they are fun to watch basking in the sun, pushing each other off
the piers and rocks or slapping each other with water, they are wild. Do not try to pet them and don’t stand
too close – as tempng as that selfie might be. While they look awkward lumbering on land they are
surprisingly fast. They also weigh on average about 660 lbs. Most of the sea lions on our shores are
bachelors who can be very territorial. Sea lions oen give a warning if annoyed by puffing up their chest
and growling – even hissing – when people get too close. Take heed and back away!
So why crossing guards at
Commercial? We oen
have big crowds at the
Market and find people
crossing against the light.
In addion to being
dangerous
for
the
pedestrian it also backs up
traffic on a day when our
streets are crowded. We
ask that you respect our
crossing guards and help
us keep everyone safe and
traffic flowing.
RIVER SONG FOUNDATION
River Song Foundaon is a nonprofit
corporaon organized and operated as
a 501(c)3 foundaon formed by a small
group of animal lovers who want to
promote and foster responsible animal
stewardship by offering services,
support, and educaon. We hope to
connect people with the resources they
need to be beer pet parents, compas-
sionate consumers, and effecve
advocates for animals. Through respect,
compassion, and reverence we want to:
• Proved food for animals that need it
in emergency situaons
• Provide support and guidance to animal caretakers to help lessen the
number of abandoned and relinquished animals.
• Create meaningful volunteer posions for people who love animals and
want to make a difference.
• Create a community that not only supports their homeless animals with
monetary contribuons, but with offerings of me, energy, and love."
