Invite: ‘Just a beautiful day for a meet’
Continued from Page 1A
And that youth “is quite
nice,” he added. “They’re
coachable, they show up on
time and do what they’re told,
and they don’t complain.”

records.
The big winner was Astoria’s
Darian Hageman.

school, Hageman is literally re-
writing the record books at As-
toria.
Having already cleared 10-
feet to set the school record in
the pole vault, Hageman won
two events and set two meet
records in Saturday’s invita-
tional.
First, she soared 17 feet, 5¾
inches in the long jump, break-
ing Charlene Harber’s mark of
17-3 set in 2009; and Hageman
capped her day with a win in
the triple jump, leaping 36-3¼,
surpassing the previous meet
record of 35-10 ¼ set by Neah-
Kah-Nie’s Alexis Anderson in
2012.
“It was all right,” Hageman
said of her record-setting day. “I
did really good in the long jump
(a PR by six inches). I want to
break the triple jump record (37-
feet, also held by Harber), and
I’m close.”
Hageman came up a bit
short in her goal in the high
jump and pole vault events,
but there’s always the rest of
the season. And the next three
years. She just keeps raising the
bar for herself.
“Now that I’m at 17 for the
long jump, I want to get 18. In
the pole vault, I want to get to
10-6 or 11, and I’d like to get 5-2
in the high jump.”
Does Hageman keep track of
the school records? You bet she
does.
“I’m keeping track,” she
said. “I have the school pole
vault record, and I really want
to break the triple jump record.
I think it would be really cool to
have two records my freshman
year.”
While Hageman is now
ranked No. 1 in the state (4A) in
the long jump and triple jump,
JOSHUA BESSEX — The Daily Astorian
Rafi Sibony leads the pack while competing in the boys 1500 meter race. Sibony placed first in the event.
her freshman teammate, Kaylee
Mitchell, is ranked No. 1 in the
state in the 800 meters.
Mitchell won Saturday’s
800 in 2 minutes, 20.6 seconds
— just over two seconds off a
22-year-old meet record held by
Seaside’s Summer Morris.
“Darian’s been coming
along like crazy, PR’ing in the
pole vault a few meets back and
setting the record,” Parks said.
“She’s just phenomenal. Then
Kaylee in the 400 and 800 is
working really hard.”

now running at the University of
Oregon.
“My coach thought I should
take a break from the 3,000
today,” Sibony said. “It was a
pretty fun race, actually. I just
wanted break 4:30. I didn’t real-
ly know what to expect, because
I haven’t run it this season. I
felt good, and it went by really
quickly, after usually running
twice as long.”
Sibony will focus on the
3,000, come districts and state.
“If I can make it to state in
the 3,000, that’s the goal,” he
said. “It will be really hard, be-
cause our league’s really good.”
The meet was not team
scored, but the Seaside boys
would have picked up a load of
points, with double victories for
senior Josh Chesnut (100 meters
and long jump) and Will Garvin
(both hurdle races).
Juneau Meyer (400 meters)
and Jackson Januik (800 meters)
also had wins, and the Gulls
swept the relays.
On the girls’ side, Seaside
senior Allison Kilday swept the
hurdles, and is now ranked No.
1 in the state in both events. She
had a personal best 15.96 in the
100-meter hurdles.
Astoria sophomore Natalie
Cummings won the 100 and
200, while junior teammate Ha-
lie Korff had two personal bests
(shot put, 37-3 ¼, and javelin,
115-1), and a season PR in the
discus (111-10). She won the
discus and shot put events.
“My number this year is 40-
140,” Korff said. “Forty feet in
the shot, 140 in the discus and
140 in the jav. I want to break
our school javelin record. It’s
133-8 right now (Juliann Nel-

Meanwhile, her shot put
mark was a milestone.
“I threw 36-11, and the next
was 36-10, then 36-11 ½,” she
said. “Trying to get to 37 was
killing me.”
The Astoria girls also swept
the relay races.
“The meet went very well,”
Parks said. “With Seaside help-
ing us out, it went really well.
