She was born on June 25, 1939, in Astoria, Ore., to John Birger and Jessie (Thorsen) Brandt Sr. Jessie graduated from Astoria High School in 1957. After graduating high school she worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Astoria as a nurse’s aide. Soon after she married George Simpson. They celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in February 2015.
